Hi everyone,

Our next meeting will be at IE premises in downtown Palo Alto. There's plenty of free parking in the small streets leading away from University Avenue.

I will send more details closer to the date but plan on bringing your laptop to follow along with the material being presented. We expect to spend an hour on R, an hour on python and the last 20-30 mts networking. Please plan on arriving on time so we can get started. Thank you, Seema.

Another comment I'd add to the comments here is that it'd be better to have the meeting focused on only one program. I think having both R and Python in the same night was tough to manage since there is a lot of material to cover for each just to even introduce the different software. A dedicated meeting on R separate from a dedicated meeting on just Python would prove useful and allow the presenters to give a more detailed presentation of each. It would also give time to do more of the hands on training being discussed here.

    Thanks to Steve and Emre!

    Comments about presentations in general:
    • The smallish screen at IE is fine for slides with 4 bullets on a page, but isn't for 20 lines of code at a time. The ipython notebook was helpful. If running code in a terminal, it would be best to configure it for, say, 30-point text. (By playing around with that beforehand, it will be possible to see how much fits on a page, and code blocks can be adjusted accordingly.)
    • I too would like interactive sessions. Ideally, presenters would post sample code, etc., in advance; we could refer to those and cut and paste as needed, but otherwise focus on the discussion.
    • I missed the first meeting, so I don't know what has been planned. In addition to interactive sessions, I'd particularly be interested seeing presentations along the lines of: "Here is a challenge we faced in our work; here is the method/tool set that we used to meet it."
    • I too would prefer to have a half-hour of networking before the presentations.

From my perspective, excellent meeting. Lot of useful information in just two hours. Great job presenters

It was okay but probably should been more interactive.

I agree. I missed the networking portion because I had to slip out early. Is it always at the end?

I think in the future, it will be at the beginning.

Might be arriving a bit late but please no need to wait for me. Look forward to the meeting.

I am happy to be part of this meet up given my Data background and look forward to tomorrow's meeting.

Attendees who wish to follow the presentation on their laptops are advised to install R and python + ipython in advance. Instructions at https://wiki.python.org/moin/BeginnersGuide/Download, software at http://ipython.org/install.html and http://www.python.org/download/

Don't worry about the 2.x vs 3.x distinction; just get the right binary for your operating system.

Thanks. I will be giving a talk on choices, optimal and otherwise of confidence intervals for a difference in binomial proportions. I'd be glad to give the lecture at a future meetup.

Hi Seema, regret I can't attend. I will be giving a statistics lecture to the Silicon Valley chapter of the ASQ that evening. :)

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
