1st Meetup - The Dawn of Consumer Virtual Reality

Join us for the SVVR kick-off meetup!

This is an important moment in the history of virtual reality. For decades VR has been available only to high-budget research laboratories. But that is changing quickly. True immersive VR is finally making its way into the hands-and homes-of early adopters. This past month has seen the release of the developer version of the first serious consumer-priced VR head-mounted display, the Oculus Rift.

Come and meet fellow VR enthusiasts, experimenters, and developers, and let's help each other explore this fascinating new frontier together.

We expect to have several speakers, with plenty of time for demos, show and tell, etc.

Confirmed Speakers:

  • Karl Krantz - (SVVR Organizer) Introduction and vision for SVVR
  • Cymatic Bruce - (Cymatic Software) VR developer, experimenter and video blogger
  • MakeVR - Sixense will demonstrate their upcoming 3D modeling application with native Oculus Rift and Razer Hydra support

If you have a project that you would like to share with the group, or a topic you would like to speak about, please contact Karl Krantz.

If you have an Oculus Rift or have any other interesting VR hardware or software to share, please consider bringing it along for the demo and show and tell portion of the event.

Doors open at 6:30PM, speakers start at 7:00.

    Great people.

I want to send out a big thanks to everyone who came out last night and supported SVVR!

Special thanks to the guys at Sixense for giving us all a real hands-on sneak peak at MakeVR, to Bruce for sharing his enthusiasm and experiences, to Nate from Oculus for coming all the way up from LA, and everyone who came out to support this.

We have some really exciting speakers and demos lined up already for future events. We've already outgrown that space, so I will announce the June event as soon as we find and confirm the right venue.

Really fantastic tonight. Thank you for putting it together Karl! And thanks to all the speakers and folks who set up demos! Looking forward to next month.

It was a good kickoff to what could potentially be new grounds for a new market.

I sadly won't be able to make it to this one. Come to San Francisco for the next one!

Will someone with a rift be willing to run a program I made for it (at the meeting)? I haven't received my rift yet, and I'm curious to see if the gimmick implemented by this program will be effective on an actual device.

If there is a need for more hydras, I can bring mine. Just let me know.

    • Karl K.

I'm sure some folks will be willing to help you test your application. If you can bring your Hydra, please do, it may come in handy.

You bet James. Be sure to bring your program on a thumb drive in case there is no WiFi or wired network access for my system.

Looking forward to seeing some of y'all again, and some of y'all for the first time.

Our company makes a camera that lets you automatically make 3D models of buildings and view them on the web via Unity. We've been excited about the Rift for a while, but our devkit hasn't arrived yet. http://www.matterport.com/explore/

I don't have my Hydra with me, but I will definitely bring along my Rift dev kit running on a MBP (HDMI).

Really looking forward to this! :-)

This is great news. And it looks like Ethan above can bring a Hydra for your system.

I have a Hydra, but my Rift dev kit hasn't come yet. Should I bring the Hydra anyway or will there be enough of those already? Really looking forward to it!

    May 14, 2013

    • Karl K.

Awesome! If you can bring it, that would be great. Perhaps you can combine it with Fred's system below.

Hi Karl, would it be ok if I brought my camera for a some video documenting of the meetup and demos? Of course I won't film anyone who doesn't want to be. Purpose would be for a short video about game creation and VR.

    May 8, 2013

    • Karl K.

Absolutely, as long as you are okay with respecting anyone's wishes who isn't up for it. Sounds fun.

Hey everyone, I have an update on the lineup for the first meetup.

Sixense, creators of the beloved Razer Hydra controller, will be giving us a sneak peak of their new MakeVR 3D modeling app with native Oculus Rift and Razer Hydra support!

I have a Rift and a Hyrdra, should I bring them and run the demos off my laptop? It'll handle Tuscany just fine.

Hi everyone. Cymatic Bruce's Rift demos on Youtube are the best!

I'm willing to bring an Oculus Rift and Hydra as well. My NVidia Titan based system, http://tinyurl.com/c5...

was built to handle any Rift demo we can throw at it, so bring whatever you want to run on a thumb drive since I'm not sure how good of an Internet connection we'll have in the room.

Fantastic Arne! Your system looks amazing, I can't wait to experience some of the more demanding demos with this much horsepower. It will be really interesting to experience the performance differences between these systems side-by-side.

Stuff's about to get rea... real virtual I guess. Hrmm, anyways can't wait to meet some cool VR enthusiasts and maybe see some original demos! Of course the location couldn't be better. Someone needs to get Woz to come...
