SSWG Tuesday Night Meeting - Character Development & Character "Speed Meetings"

  • Aug 27, 2013 · 7:00 PM

Welcome to the Silver Spring Writer's Group Tuesday Meeting!

The Tuesday meetings are a great opportunity to get to know the writers in our group.  With a more casual format than the Saturday meetings, we typically meet from 7pm - 8:30 pm ET on the fourth Tuesday of the month.

The meeting is divided into two parts:

(1)  Introductions

(2)  Targeted Discussion

Introductions
is a time to introduce yourself, your work, and any issues you may be facing that you think your fellow writers can help with.

Targeted Discussion is just that - a chance to talk about anything and everything related to your writing, writing in general, literature as we know it today!  Typically I'll try to provide a handout or resources focused on a particular area of writing (such as narrative structure, character, dialogue, etc).  Sometimes we also do writing activities, where each individual will have approximately 20 minutes to write and then share (if you want!) with our colleagues to get additional ideas about what's working.

Focus for the 7/23/13 Meeting: Character Development and Character "Speed Meetings" Fiction, non-fiction, or other writers, come on down for a discussion of how to develop and round out your characters.  As part of this exercise, we will also be hosting a character "speed meetings" which is a group exercise where you provide four or five key facts about your character and "meet" another character in the group.  After five minutes, you switch to a new character and continue through the process, allowing you to better articulate who your character is and refine your "elevator pitch" for your hero, anti-hero, or villain.

Index cards will be provided.  If you have questions, feel free to reach out to me via email. Of course, you're always welcome just to watch and/or observe. I'm excited to have you come and looking forward to your contribution!

Parking Information: Closest free parking - Garage at 2nd Avenue and Cameron Street, across from the Tastee Diner.  More information at http://www.silverspringdowntown.com/go/cameron-second-garage-7.

Would this group be interested in a mystery story that I've been working on for 15+ years?

Hi Stephen! We're open to all kinds of writing, although I will mention that the Tuesday night meetings are more focused on discussion/workshopping. I'd encourage you to submit your writing for critque for one of the Saturday meetings. The Saturday meetings review a 10 page sample of the work and provide feedback. You can submit by posting to the "Files" section under the "More" tab, with a note describing your story and that you'd like it reviewed.
