DESCRIPTION OF HIKE: Strenuous 10.7 miles one-way with 2,100’ of elevation gain/loss [with a car shuttle back to the trailhead at the end of the hike for some of the participants].
The Los Robles Trail is located in the southern portion of the Conejo Open Space; it stretches from Newbury Park to Westlake and is the only national historical trail in California. Our hike will begin at the west end of the trail where we’ll follow it as we wend our way along the mountain slopes to Angel Vista overlooking the Conejo Valley, Camarillo, Boney Mountain and (weather permitting) the Channel Islands. Continuing eastward along the trail we’ll have excellent views of Hidden Valley and its horse ranches and the Topa Topa Mountains to the north. After a brief stop at the Conejo Valley Scenic Overlook, we’ll continue eastward to the Triunfo Canyon Trail which we’ll follow down to our shuttle vehicle(s).
PREPAREDNESS: Bring 2-3 liters/quarts of water (or other suitable liquid) and lunch/snack. Wear appropriate footwear (preferably hiking boots) and be prepared for bright sunlight (sunglasses), heat (layers of clothing), and/or precipitation (rain gear). Hiking pole(s) and a camera might come in handy.
NOTE: At the beginning of each outing you will be required to read and sign a liability release form (a sign-in sheet).
DIRECTIONS TO THE CARPOOL LOCATION IN SIMI VALLEY:
NOTE: Everyone must meet here first.
Take Hwy 118 to the Madera Road exit in Simi Valley.
Drive south 1.4 miles on Madera Road to its junction with Royal Avenue [at a traffic light]
Turn left (east) onto Royal Avenue and immediately turn left into the first driveway on your left (north)
Park near Donut Delite and wait for the hiking leader(s) who will distribute specific driving directions to the Matilija Canyon trailhead.
