Trapped in a tower, trapped in herself, this medieval maiden, a "modern woman" before her time, tries to find her own way out of the turret instead of simply waiting for her prince. Yes, you guessed it- a contemporary Rapunzel- not a damsel in distress, but a daring dame who solves her own problem. Replete with a garden full of singing fruits and vegetables, a wise-cracking rat, a mirthful bluebird named Calliope, a sage cricket, and a bumbling flying squirrel named Chester, who can't fly, this play has everything from comedy to suspense to drama to a collection of catchy, original songs woven throughout the plot. And what story would be complete without a memorable villain? Different from most witches of unilateral evil, Mother Gothel is depicted as a multi-faceted character. The relationship between Mother Gothel and Rapunzel is portrayed as a love/hate bond, so that Mother Gothel is presented more richly as both prison warden and adoptive mother; for in accordance with the original story, she takes Rapunzel in when she is but a wee babe. Mother Gothel's minion, Alabaster, the black sewer rat, is a groveling sycophant who would gladly sell his own litter up the river for a hunk of brie.
