We used to think the Venusian clouds hid a carbonated swampland, and that Martian areas like Syrtis Major sloshed with dying oceans. While we were wrong about those, seas of many kinds populate the worlds around us, from methane seas on Titan to deep oceans of liquid metallic hydrogen in the hearts of the gas giants. Join Michael Carroll on a journey through Alien Seas across our solar system, touring ancient Martian oceans, modern Europan depths and other cosmic beachfront property.

Michael Carroll

Michael Carroll is a science journalist and astronomical artist, with over twenty books in print. He has written articles for such magazines as Sky & Telescope, Astronomy, Popular Science, Asimov's, Analog, Clubhouse, Odyssey, Sea Frontiers, and Artists magazines. His latest book is Drifting on Alien Winds. It explores the weather of other planets and moons. Other recent books include Alien Volcanoes (Johns Hopkins University Press), The Seventh Landing (Springer), and Space Art (Random House). His next book, Alien Seas, is slated for a fall 2013 release. Carroll is a Fellow and founding member of the International Association of Astronomical Artists. He has done work for Lockheed/Martin, NASA and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. His art has appeared in several hundred magazines throughout the world, including AVIATION WEEK & SPACE TECHNOLOGY, SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN, TIME, NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC, SKY & TELESCOPE, and others. One of his original paintings flew aboard MIR, and another is on the surface of Mars (in digital form) aboard the Phoenix spacecraft. He is the recipient of the Lucien Rudaux award for lifetime achievement in the astronomical arts, and the Jonathan Eberhart award for science feature writing.

The OCA has a general meeting held on the second Friday of every month* at Chapman University.

These meetings are free and open to the general public.

The meetings take place in The Irvine Lecture Hall with seating for approximately 250 people.

The Irvine Lecture Hall (located adjacent to the Hashinger Science Center) is near the south east corner of the campus
and the nearest cross street is East Palm Ave and North Center Street.

The meetings start promptly at 7:30 PM.

Usually presented by the OCA Secretary, Bob Buchheim.

7:45 PM - 8:15 PM "What's Up?"
Usually presented by OCA Member and Space Artist, Chris Butler.

8:15 PM - 9:15 PM Main Talk
Speakers are often from JPL/Caltech and other major educational and astronomical institutions.
The level of the talks are usually appropriate for anyone who has an interest in this hobby.

9:15 PM - 9:30 PM Refreshments
Break Donuts, coffee, soda are available for a small donation.

9:30 PM - 10:00 PM "Ask an Astronomer"
Anyone can stay behind and ask a panel of experts any burning question related to this hobby.
