This is hardly original, but I want to know if there's other life out there. The probability estimates seems to be all over the scoreboard. Some say it's certain; another guy told me there could be only be life if there was another planet exactly like Earth, which he doubts. Perhaps this group can give me a better-informed opinion. I'm also intrigued (here's a nerdy one) by the disparity between quantum theory and relativity, which Stephen Hawking says cannot both be true -- at least, in their present form. Forget the answer, I'm still grappling with the question on that one. Any thoughts?
I'd like to meet people who can read the above paragraph and care about what I'm saying. I'm tired of apathetic nods, I want folks whose interest is engaged.
Patricia Milner asked me to help host something, and in a moment of recklessness I agreed. But I must admit, this is starting to look like fun.

I'm a sometime science-fiction writer and occasional science nerd, who's frustrated by the epic level of ignorance in the media and the public. They say Leonardo Da Vinci was the last man to know everything, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't try!
