The International Year of Astronomy and You
Held by our Partner, Orange County Space Society on Sunday, 17 May

Dear SoCal Science Cafe members,

Hello to all of you! Thank you for joining us here at SoCal Science Cafe! I am happy to announce that last 14 April, 2009, was SoCal Science Cafe's 4th Anniversary! My name is Spc. Dr. Brian Hart, astrophysicist, and founder of the SoCal Science Cafe. Four years and still going strong!

Memorial Day is coming up, and I am sure many of you will be taking time to remember loved ones who died in service of the country. I myself will be pausing to remember both my Grandfathers, who both served in the Army as Soldiers. One was enlisted Infantry, and one was a medical logistics officer for the VA. One is passed on, and one is still with us. My being a Soldier myself is partly a tribute to them. Speaking of that, I will be in town for Memorial Day Weekend, and then the day after Memorial Day I will be heading off to Basic Combat Training at beautiful Fort Jackson, South Carolina! I am an Officer Candidate in the Alabama Army National Guard.

The U.S. Space and Rocket Center, home of Space Camp, this weekend is marking the 125th Anniversary of IEEE, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc. They are on the Web at ieee.org. The U.S. Space and Rocket Center, located in Huntsville, AL, is offering free admission to their museum for all Huntsville residents this weekend. I was there with my Mom last weekend for Mother's Day. We watched the new Star Trek movie together on their big IMAX screen. It was so cool! In a way, as a uniformed member of the Federal military's space program, I almost feel like I am living real life Star Trek myself!

That's all I have for now! Wish me well at Basic Training! You can write to me (address your letters to SPC Brian Hart, no "Dr" or "Mr" or "PhD" it will get sent back) via postal mail, but you first have to wait 7 business days following 26 May, and then call Fort Jackson Installation Operations Center at (803) 751-7671. The Center will provide you with the Platoon, Company, and Battalion information you will need to properly address your letter or card. I would very much appreciate an uplifting letter or card from my peeps back in LA! Sorry, but you will not be able to send me email during this 10-week time. I know, bummer. :-( Wish me luck that I drop the pin and throw the grenade, not the other way around...

After Basic Combat Training ends I will then return to the beautiful State of Alabama (being I am a National Guardsman) but then I will ship to Fort McClellan, Alabama, for a 8-week Officer Candidate School program, whereupon I will be a Second Lieutenant in the Army upon graduation.

Stay tuned, but the Orange County Astronomers is planning on having me for their December Speaker! The talk will be "All You Wanted to Know about Satellites," and I will be giving it as Lt. Hart! Satellites play a major role in our wired society today, for everything from your cell phone to XM Satellite Radio to your DirecTV service, and the GPS on your cell phone. Come join me and the Astronomers as I give you an easy-to-understand orientation to satellites, so you can track satellites on your own -- it's a fun hobby!

Well, that's all I have for now. Catch you all on the dark side of the Moon!

Sincerely Yours,

SPC/Dr. Brian Hart
