Happy New Year! Counting 6 Years of SoCal Science Cafe!

From: Dr. Brian H.

Dear SoCal Science Cafe members and friends,
My name is Spc. Brian Hart and I am a Ph.D. astrophysicist, and I am also the Founder of SoCal Science Cafe, the region's largest umbrella program for Bringing Together Science, Art, Culture, and Life in the Greater Los Angeles-San Diego Southern California Region!
Wishes go out to you members from myself and the whole gang here at SoCal Science Cafe, as well as to our founding Chapters of Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society, which is devoted to the promotion of research in science, by our charter Chapters at UC Irvine and Orange County, represented by Dr. Frederick Wan and Dr. Stan White, respectfully.  Thank you to you for your past and continued support of this program.
We're going to have been doing this SoCal Science Cafe program for SIX -- that's right -- 6 years -- on 15 April, 2010.  SIX YEARS!  WOW!  I founded the program on 15 April, 2004 (I did it to procrastinate on doing my taxes, come to think of it)
In those six years we've grown from being five people meeting in Starbucks to 714 members having attended 183 events occurring all the way from the vicinity of Edwards Air Force Base up near Palmdale/Lancaster, all the way down to Marine Corps Air Station Miramar and greater San Diego -- and everywhere in between!
Congratulations to my esteemed colleague and good friend, Dr. Paul Shin, for his leadership of the Cafe program as Director after my departure for Army service.  Being in the military has taught me a lot about the intangibles of life, and I have been enjoying every single second of living up to this higher challenge and calling of service to country.
I miss Southern California, but not its high prices (whew).  So when I can afford it again I will definitely be coming back out, but not for a long while yet.  My plan is to settle down in Huntsville and start a family, and enjoy a nice long career as a commissioned military officer before I hang up my beret.  I will probably be back to SoCal for my retirement.  I sure hope SoCal Science Cafe is still going strong by then!
Demanding Excellence in Myself Always,
Spc. Brian Hart
