The Venue & Logistics
While Chiang Mai boasts a vibrant international and professional network, the city currently lacks dedicated, free-to-use civic community centers suitable for focused intellectual gatherings. To ensure an environment that is conducive to rigorous, uninterrupted dialogue—free from the noise of typical public spaces—we secure a private room for our meetings.
Venue Contribution: 200 THB per person (this directly covers the cost of renting the private space).
The Evolution of Our Methodology
Historically, the Socrates Café model has relied heavily on traditional, open-ended Socratic questioning. While that remains foundational, we are elevating the format. To foster a deeper, more structured exploration of complex topics, our sessions now integrate Inquiry-Based Learning and Problem-Based Learning.
Specifically, we utilize the 5E Instructional Model:
Engage: Capturing interest and identifying the core philosophical or social problem.
Explore: Collaborative, unfiltered cross-examination of ideas.
Explain: Articulating definitions and clarifying foundational concepts.
Elaborate: Applying these concepts to real-world scenarios and stress-testing them for intellectual antifragility.
Evaluate: Reflecting on the evolution of our understanding and the cognitive blind spots we have uncovered.
This pedagogical shift ensures that participants do not just debate endlessly, but actively dissect problems and build more robust frameworks together. About the Facilitator
