    Fun and interesting discussion.

Here's the talk Richard gave about Socrates Cafe at the last Ethical Culture Society of Bergen County Platform

Terri, thanks for sharing. Richard's talk was very helpful in understanding the purpose and norms of the Café. I hope everyone who attends reads it and takes advantage of the insights it provides.

Some facts relating to Monday night’s topic:
    1) According to a 2009 Pew Research poll: 33% of scientists say they believe in God, while 18% believe in a universal spirit or higher power. 41% say they do not believe in God or a higher power. 8% say they don’t know or did not answer.
    2) According to the Einstein Wikipedia entry, Einstein “said he believed in the "pantheistic" God of Baruch Spinoza, but not in a personal god, a belief he criticized. He also called himself an agnostic, while disassociating himself from the label atheist.”
    3) According to Hawking Wikipedia entry, Hawking said the following in relation to his latest book, The Grand Design: "Because there are laws such as gravity, the universe can and will create itself from nothing. It is not necessary to invoke God to…set the Universe going”

In answer to someone's question, it appears that the public, including search engines, can read our comments here and see if we RSVP.

A challenging topic and a good meeting, nicely facilitated by Richard. A civil, thoughtful discussion with diverse viewpoints. Great to see some first-time attendees, including Javier, Liz, and Anu.

I think 12 people attended, and the topic we chose was something like why do people believe that god does or doesn't exist.

Yikes! From NPR on 9/17/2013: "Two men standing in line for beer in southern Russia began arguing about the Critique of Pure Reason author, and "decided to find out which of them is a bigger fan of this philosopher, and a tempestuous argument escalated into a fist fight." At that point, investigators say, one man shot the other with a non-fatal bullet." I'm not sure the lesson here.

Perhaps the lesson is, "You 'Kant' always get what you want."

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
