Presentation Patterns: Exploring MVC, MVP, and MVVM

One of the cornerstones of good software design is providing a separation of concerns. To help solve the problem of keeping the GUI from knowing too much about the back end, the concept of the MVC pattern was born. The fact that this pattern has been with us since 1988, an eternity by technology standards, reflects how well it has stood the test of time as a solid approach for separating the front end from the back end. In our Internet-centric world of 2013 the MVC model has become a de facto standard for creating a web site.

However, MVC is not the only way to bring about a separation of the layers. The less-known patterns, Model-View-Presenter (MVP) and Model-View-ViewModel (MVVM), also have their place in application development and in some cases are preferred over MVC.

Jim Tomney will open the meeting with a brief overview of the MVP pattern and provide an example of its implementation. Following our MVP introduction Nathan Koterba will review the MVC and MVVM patterns and how they help achieve a more robust and maintainable application.

We will meet at TEKsystems in Linthicum. There is plenty of free parking in front of the building. The meeting will start at 7:00 PM. If you get there after 7:00 and find yourself locked out, you will find our phone number posted on the front door. Call the number and someone will come to let you in. Don't be embarrassed - happens all the time.

We will provide a little time for networking at the beginning of the meeting, so you are welcome to arrive a few minutes early for pizza and conversation.
