Many developers, especially those committed to software quality, have discovered the power of unit tests. They are an excellent check to prevent regression, and serve a key role in both driving development and facilitating refactoring. One benefit of unit tests that is often overlooked, though, is their value as executable documentation. Properly structured, unit tests can provide a clear description of the external behavior of code that does not become out of date in the way that comments all too frequently can.
