Surrey - Guildford STC Meetup

Time for another meetup! any excuse to talk about software testing over some beer.
If anyone is interested in doing a short talk, let me know, I think we have a couple of volunteers wishing to practise their presentation skills. The plan is to meet up at The Keep from 6.30 onwards.

    99 sec
    Descartes proposition 'the cogito'
    States i think therefore I am -
The simple meaning is that doubting one’s existence, in and of itself, proves that an "l" exists to do the thinking.
This became the foundation of western philosophy. Ref - wiki
When reading about the definition of philosophy I drew parallels with testing.
    To be Reflective
    To think critically
    To be logical
We gather in small rooms to hear each others thoughts
Things are put in before us and we are asked to muse over.
One questions the myriad of paths through functionality and life
We offer alternate sometimes outlandish scenarios
We have the ability to question,
    what if this
    suppose I do
These qualities make a great tester
When creating tests You create a hypothesis and then verify if it is correct.
Testing is not about the act of pressing a button or following a script
    A computer cannot think,
    it merely follows a program.
Testing is the act of thinking
    To test is to think

      So my proposition is...
      I test therefore I am.

when you next fill in an online form that asks for your occupation, they never have software tester!... select 'philosopher'.

Just some more information on the talk of the day which will start at 7.30pm. It will 15 minutes on: Title: Introduction to Behaviour Driven Development

    Description:
Teams serious about rapidly developing quality software are turning to Behaviour Driven Development (BDD) for identifying misunderstanding within requirements before works starts, as well as for test automation to reduce manual testing and regression testing. Anything up to 50-60% of issues identified by software testers can be chalked down as Requirements Defects. Why not come along and learn about BDD?

Developers are welcome as it will be role neutral

    Just an update -

plus a couple of speakers who will giving us 99 second talk.

    See you all there

  • Rosie S.

Anyone want or able to video the 99 second talks?

    June 4, 2013

    • Alan P.

I might be able to convince a member of staff to film it. Do you have the video camera or do we need to source one?

      June 4, 2013

    • Rosie S.

I have a video camera, but I'm not going to the meetup. It would be ideal if you could source one, if it's a problem we can come up with a solution. :)
