Official STC Meetup in Nottingham!

For a while now Andy Glover and I (Adam Brown) have been discussing holding a gathering for Testers in the Midlands area. It wasn’t until recently that we actually started to put things in motion and started putting the bits together. We couldn’t help but notice the success of the London Test Gatherings that are frequently held in, um, London, and decided that it was time a similar event closer to home was organised.

Here are some of the details for the event:

  • James Bach has kindly agreed to attend the gathering and will be giving a presentation. If you’ve never met James before, this would be the perfect opportunity to pop down and meet him in the flesh! For me personally, this will be a great honour as we have James teaching the Rapid Software Testing course at our office that week and it will be a great way to round off the course.
  • Free entry! That’s right. We’re not charging you a penny to get in!
  • A free drink for the first 25 people to arrive at the event :o)
  • A copy of The Testing Planet for you to read or take home with you!
  • A chance to mingle with like minded Testers and to share and discuss your ideas with fellow Testing enthusiasts!

I am ready to upload James presentation video in full. Any suggestions. Through my blog or STC(how?).

How about the entire bit with me in it?

Still having trouble buying additional capacity from Google. Retried this morning and the order has gone through successfully. Just checked my Google account before preparing the file from James speech to upload, it seems I have to trim at least 100MB before it can be uploaded. Any suggestions which part should I curtail.

I have purchased extra storage from Google and I will be able to upload the file tomorrow then we should be able to link up file to STC as well as to my blog. More tomorrow.

YouTube has a time limit of 15 minutes.

One options is for STC to sign up to a premium account with Vimeo.

Another option might be Blip.Tv, though they seem more commercial and say they are for 'tv shows'. They have a 1gb limit - not sure if this is the right option?

I have the video ready but can't post it on Vimeo because of size limitations per week as Adam mentioned in his comment. Slicing into 3 parts can be done but that means people have to wait for another 10 days to see the video. I have compressed it to 1.1GB but that is way too large to post in one hit. Any suggestions. Warning last 2-3 minutes of James speech was not captured due to technical problems.

A word of warning about Vimeo. They only allow 500mb a week of upload space. Not sure if YouTube has any restrictions any more. I prefer Vimeo though as their embedder looks a lot cooler!

    Hi All,

I managed to get 1 hr 2 minutes of the presentation on a single tape but missed the last 2 minutes. Did not have time to swap the tape quickly enough. The earlier part of tape may be in grey due to the default night plus setting on the camcorder. Will try to break it down to 4 chunks before putting them on Vimeo.

Hi Paul. I'm still working on the Videos and hope to get these up online by Friday at the latest. I have around 40 minutes of James' talk before I ran out of space on my camera! I know that Mohinder may have gotten the entire thing as he was filming behind me.

Hi Adam, thanks for organising the meet. Was good to meet you all, it was a shame we had to leave early for the train. Is the video of James' talk available online anywhere?

    February 28, 2011

It was a enjoyable evening. Had a chance to meet James again and hear his challenging stance on critical thinking. Lightening talks were interesting and educational. Would do it again.

Had a good time, well done talkers, need to time box though, keep it to 5mins, questions to be asked once talks are done and everybody mingling rather than keep the talker up there. Didn't understand the slides though, to me lightening talks are spontaneous and not prepared.

Great little venue and good to meet so many like-minded people. My talk seemed to go down OK as well. Most of all, kudos for getting James Bach to attend.

    When's the next meetup?

    February 24, 2011

  • Dave R.

A fun and informative meetup - loved the lightning talks but thought that James Bach was exceptional. Will have to read some more of his stuff

  • Adam B.

Great turn out! I wasn't expecting that many people to turn up, especially as this was the first time we had this kind of thing in Nottingham.

    February 24, 2011

  • Paul B.

Thanks, that's really helpful of you!

    February 23, 2011

  • Adam B.

We've changed the time of James' talk to 8:30pm

    February 23, 2011

  • Paul B.

Any chance of moving James forward half an hour to 8:30? I ask purely selfishly as I'll be having to leave to catch a train at 9:30. There may be others in the same boat...

Also, for those giving a lightning talk who, like me, have never done so before, you might find this useful: http://www.perl.com/pub/2004/07/30/lightningtalk.html

Right, the provisional line up for tomorrow night is as follows:

7pm Arrival and get your drinks
    7:30-8pm Lightning Talks
    9pm James Bach
    10pm End

    February 22, 2011

  • Pradip M.

Sorry, I am not able to join the meetup in Nottingham

    February 22, 2011

  • Del D.

The drive down will be fun, but will need intravenous Red Bull to make the drive back to Scotland afterwards. Should be buzzing after it anyway...

Sadly I won't be able to make it now :( I hope it goes well and that there will be future events in Nottingham as I would really like to come along another time.

    February 22, 2011

  • Adam B.

We’re looking at having a few people give lightening talks. A lightning talk is a quick 5 minute presentation on a given topic. We have around 3 people volunteer so far, but it would be great if we could have a few more presenters! Please give me or Andy Glover a shout if you are interested!

That's strange. I've tried it as well and it still shows "J9". Looks like we've found a bug :)

    February 10, 2011

@Adam tried putting right post code on event listing, but it's not allowing it. How annoying :(

    February 10, 2011

All booked and paid! The postcode above looks a little iffy though. The correct postcode is: NG1 3AL

I think it is going to be an enjoyable event and it would be nice to catch with friends from STC, Twitter and beyond.

    February 7, 2011

  • Rosie S.

    Hi Nina,

We can bear it in mind, but not sure if it will be suitable for this one. It's more of a social event than anything else, might end up transmitting a load of noise. Though I have been told that James will be giving a presentation, perhaps this can be recorded and uploaded after the event.

    Unless you had specific ideas?

The other option is to organise a meetup in your area.

    Regards,

    Rosie
