SIS Learning Series: Boost Your Creative Productivity

Are you not as productive a songwriter as you’d like?  Do you think you get in your own way?  This two and a half hour workshop, led by psychologist Andrea Neal, PhD, will teach cognitive-behavioral techniques to help you become more productive and consistent, and thus, more creative.  Here are some things we’ll work on:

- Learn how to set up routines, your work space, and your time

- Learn about and practice setting up reasonable and meaningful goals and how to reward yourself for accomplishing them

- Identify and dispute inaccurate beliefs about yourself or your work that are getting in your way.

Andrea is NOT an artist, but does live with one, and she has a host of psychological tricks (based on good science) to help you get things done in your musical career.

We had the follow-up meeting yesterday. Three of us attended. We decided that it still might be nice to start a "writing" group for songwriters for encouragement and support that would meet once a month. It would be a small stable group of people for sharing work, critiques, songwriting exercises, and possible collaborators. The next meeting will be on Thursday July 10 at 7:30pm. We are planning on recruiting a few more people (up to a max of 10) by either word of mouth or by posting the next meeting on the SIS meet-up site.

Thanks again Elsa for following up and organizing this on our behalf, and mostly for offering up your place. I'll think about what I'd like the topic/subject of this group to be and bring it along.

Nice...see everyone on June 12! And again, big thanks to Elsa!

Okay, it is settled. Thursday June 12 (second Thursday) at 7:30pm at my house will be the first follow-up meeting. I'll send an e-mail to everyone with my address.
At the first meeting, we can decide on the specific meeting structure that would be most helpful.
As far as using the meet-up site to schedule the event, it doesn't allow me to only invite the people who attend this workshop (or any subgroup of people besides all of SIS), so we will have to stick with e-mail for now (it does let me e-mail everyone who attended the event).

I think that is a great idea. Many events do seem to be scheduled for the first week of the month, so going for the second should avoid some conflicts.

    Hi All,
If Thursdays in general work for people, why don't we do 2nd Thursdays instead? There are often opportunities to perform/busk on 1st Thursday in Pioneer Square and that could go a bit later.

Yes, Thursday works for me. : )

That day works for me. A 7:30 or 8:30 start time does also.

Hey Elsa, thanks so much for following up on this for us all.
My first comment is that I'd definitely like to be a part of a sub-group like this. Secondly in regards to your first shot at deciding timing, I usually attend the Pioneer Square First Thursday gallery walk which would be a conflict. If it starts at 7:30, I could still spend an hour or so downtown and then attend. After all, as Ron (from Harry Potter) said, I need to sort out my priorities!
    Thanks again Elsa!

It sounds like there is some interest in a follow-up meeting, the structure of the meeting TBD. I could host the first meeting at my house (in maple leaf / lake city area). Let's pick a day and time with the idea that this could become a monthly recurring meeting. I'll throw out a suggestion:
First Thursday of the Month, 7:30 - 9:30pm with a possible first meeting on June 5

I would be interested in a follow up or songwriting group. I think it would be fun and a good way to bounce around some ideas.

Thank you Elsa for taking action to create a follow up meeting. I'm in. : )

    Thanks for asking Elsa!
I would definitely be interested in some sort of follow-up, as I particularly liked this bunch of people! And because I felt like I had a lot in common with you all I'd be interested in sharing some songs in progress. Honestly I'm not sure it would be like asking for help, but more just the nice feeling of sharing...again, with a group of singer/songwriter types that would have a sympathetic ear.
    Anyone else?

Is there interest in having a follow-up meeting? Or forming a group that meets regularly to share songs (like a writing group)?
If so, please comment here and we can try to put something together.

The workshop provided much grist to the mill. Thanks to Andrea and to all the participants! Alas, to employ said tips, techniques, skills - that remains to be seen.

Agreed all around. It's a comfortable community, and I feel like I can express myself to others who "get it."

Thanks to everyone for joining the discussion!

A big thank you to Andrea for giving the workshop today. All the information was very useful. There was lots of discussion and it was great to hear how other people approach goals, time management, and overcoming obstacles.

Hey everyone, I'm going to jump into this one, but I'm not clear on how to pay. Do we just pay at the workshop? Should we bring instruments? What else to participants need to know?
    Thanks!

    April 20

    • Elsa

This is a lecture-style class with discussion. There will not be any playing, so you don't need to bring your instrument. You could bring a pen and paper for taking notes.

      April 21

    • Elsa

Yes, you can pay at the event. Also, I just edited the event so that you can pay ahead of time on-line using paypal (I forgot to check the box when I created the event).

    Yes, Maybe.

If you are not going to attend, please change your RSVP to NO. Also, note that a 48 hour cancellation is requested for any payments to be refunded.

      April 14

  • Stephen

    $20?

    April 13

    • Stephen

Paid at the door, I presume. :)

      April 13

    • Elsa

Yes, it is $20 for the workshop and you can either pay ahead of time through paypal or with cash at the event.
