Kern River Hiking Adventure

It's a long weekend in Sequioa National Park.  Two days of hiking and a half day on the river before our ride home.  I recommend on your ride to Kernville on Thursday you make a day of it and see some of the park!  We are taking it easy and staying at the Pine Cone Inn.  Please not that we are requesting that you stay all 3 nights if you are planning on staying at the Pine Cone because they are holding the rooms just for us.  If you are coming for two nights then I would stay nearby.    Though you probably could find a close campground if that's the way you want to go.  We also have an alternate motel available once the Pine Cone fills up.

Reserving at the Pine Cone. The Pine Cone (http://pinecone-inn.com/)is holding every room (all 11!) in the joint just for us, for three nights, June 27 – June 30! The rate is $85/room and we are counting on the Wanderers to reserve for all three nights. There are a limited number of rooms (3) with two beds and the rest have a single king. Please make your room reservation at the Pine Cone no later than April 15. If there are any rooms left at that point, we’ll make an announcement to the rest of the group.Note: we do have other accommodations lined up for the over-flow and for those who don’t want to stay for all three nights; we’re just trying to get the Pine Cone filled up first. Here’s the number to call:[masked]-6669. Ask for Ivan, be sure to mention the Wanderers to get the special $85/night rate, and let him know if you want a room with one or two beds. If you call and the Pine Cone is full then please make a comment and I will give you the info on the nearby accommodation.  We hope to have a full house in the Pine Cone so we can potlock, wine taste and laugh together.  There is a kitchen available to us to warm up our potluck contributions.

Itinerary:

Friday: Hiking to two different peaks near Kernville

Saturday:  Freeman Creek Trail described as follows:

The pristine Freeman Creek Grove of giant sequoias is well removed from the tourist circuit, treating hikers to the thrill of discovery. Straightforward and well maintained, the trail meets the first giant sequoias well within the first mile, and doles them out in generous helpings all along the way. Handsome, dignified, and well proportioned amidst other large conifers and robust foliage, they are more majestic in this setting than when you find them fenced and surrounded by shutterbugs.

Sunday-River RaftingAs I’m sure you have noticed, we haven’t had a great deal of rainfall this year, which will have an impact on whitewater rafting options this summer. Even so, we’ve got a plan. We are currently “holding” space for the Wanderers on a Half Day Upper Kern (Class 4)white water rafting trip for Sunday, June 30, from 11 am – 3 pm, through SierraSouth. HOWEVER, we won’t know if they will even be able to run this trip until late April because of the water situation. So, what we’ll do is book now for the trip we know they can run, the Lickety-Split Raft Trip(Class 2 – 3), described as “three miles of jam-packed action on Kern River rapids such as Big Daddy, Sidewinder, Freight Train, and Ewings.” If and when the Half Day Upper Kern trip becomes available, Sierra South will let everyone in our group who signed up for Lickety-Split know and give them the option of “upgrading.” The cost for Lickety-Split is $37, the Half Day Upper Kern is $134. Wanderers get a 15% discount on both of them, but you must use the promo code PINECONE when you are checking out. Here is the link to register and pay for the raft trip:
http://reservations.sierrasouth.com/express/reservation/results.jsf?activityIds=49746While it’ll be great if we get to do the Class 4 trip, we’ll still have a ball on Lickety Split, ‘cause that’s how we roll…….Just read that there is a limit on Upper Kern (if we can do it) of 25! So, it'll be first come first served and they'll pull from the folks who signed up and paid for Lickety Split first......

I know I made several references to "Mad Dogs and Englishmen" as we walked up the unshaded fire road to get to the water slide. Here's a link to the Noel Coward tune I was referring to. (Just change "Englishmen" to "Wanderers.") Beware, I'm sure it's politically incorrect at many levels:

So many exciting memories made and wonders experienced in such a short, but glorious, trip. I can't remember when I had this much fun. And the adventure too! Thanks to Elaine, Leigh, Roberta and the Con, my roomies, team 3 and the whole group for your delightful selves! Wish we didn't have to leave!

t's taken me a day to calm down enough to be able to express my thoughts. I'm flabbergasted, overwhelmed, full of joy and so very thankful to you all. This trip will be posted soon for next year...beginning (less heat I hope) of June but, I have to say....I'm not sure we can top this trip. I'm sure it will be a fantastic time but this trip was truly the best trip to date with the Wanderers. On the drive home I was talking to my car mates and saying how it wasn't that long ago that I would post a hike, a couple people would sign up and then no one would actually show up.. I would hope for just ONE person....then came along Gerald, then Margaret, then Brigitte, and Andy and I really had a group! I'm so glad I didn't give up, but then you might have realized that it takes a lot (or a wasp) to get me to quit. Now I have all of you...and I hope it never changes. I'm so grateful. You are the best! Oh...remember Roberta's request...write a review on Yelp or Trip Advisor for her!!

OMG! The BEST Road trip ever. Come Hell or Low Water (and we had a little bit of each.....) What a fantastic group of people to spend a scorching week-end in the mountains with -- especially the awesome members of Team Amnesia. Floating in the pool at "The Con," late Saturday night, listening to Etta James (thank you Lorra and Richard).....I thought I'd died and gone to Heaven. I hope, hope, hope we do this one again!

I was outside the market in Kernville, and had a short conversation with a local man...we were admiring the beauty of the early morning sun beginning to illuminate the mountains. He said, " my father told me once, Never take your surroundings for granted." That's how I feel about this trip, and the Wanderers. Special times, special people. Every hike, every road trip--memories to cherish. With gratitude, and joy--thank you all!

The Freeman trail was beautiful! Those lush meadows amongst the towering red columns!
And then, waterslide heaven! Felt like an all-out romp at a happy family reunion. The big search, converting coordinates and all that, to find the place, was part of the fun. Nice to have a surveyor (yay, Paul!) and some tricky advanced technology (yay, Lorra and 4 coop 2!) on our team. And our very own EMT (yay, Marcia!)!!

Kernville: Prologue - It was a pretty incredible 4 day adventure!! I am proud to be a Wanderer after watching so many caring people encourage each other to "go for it" while taking each individual's needs and limits into consideration. A "you can do it", "we're here for you" but only if you want to mantra that seemed to last the whole weekend. I applaud you, my adventurous Wandering friends!! Bravo!! : )

Cocktail hour at the Pine Cone anyone? Kathy and I were thinking that it might be real nice to have a cocktail before dinner and a bloody mary would just work great! Since beverages are on your own, we are each bringing a 75 cl bottle of bloody mary that we will make ourselves and we will have a glass during a cocktail hour in the evening while in Kernville. Each glass will be @ 25 cl, which is the equivalent of a tumbler 3/4 full. We will bring the condiments we like such as celery and olives. Feel free to join us if you are interested! A typical mix would be 1 part vodka to 3 parts bloody mary mix but you can adjust that to your taste... To fill a 75 cl bottle, using 3/4 cups would work very well and get you settled for the whole stay :)

Hi Dinner Team #3 - Today is a good day to finalize your thoughts about what you are bringing to share for dinner on Saturday night if you haven't done so already. So far, food contributions look great but we could use some cheese and a couple of green/vegetable salads. It looks like we could also use sides such as a potato salad or couscous salad. Thanks in advance for your feedback.

    Hi Kern Folk!
Just some updates! The rafting company has switched us to inflatable kayaks due to low (no snow this winter) water levels...I talked to them about all the offered extra's. They are EXTRA's because you don't need them but some people might WANT them to be more comfortable. Most of us are opting to go without! If kayaking is not your thing, you can update your reservation. For your info...every room in the Pine Cone is equipped with a microwave and there are 2 refrigerators available for our use in addition to the small one in your room. I'm not sure what the arrange is for those of you staying elsewhere!
We should start firming up meal plans next week. You can check to make sure you are included on a team. Any guests will need to join in as well! It's almost time....yippee!!!!

    June 18, 2013

    • Kathy F

Richie - yes we have a grill we can use. Please let me know what you're also bringing for the veggie entree/side dish you are bringing (to serve at least 9). And you can see all the discussions re: food here: http://www.meetup.com...

Im bringing some pasta salad too.

      June 25, 2013

  • Elaine d.

Just got off the phone with SIERRA SOUTH. Here's the deal. Rafting is out because of the water levels. However, we can choose between inflatable kayaks and innertubes. (There is a guide with kayaks, but you're on your own in innertubes.) In the kayaks it's a two-hour trip and costs $25. It's the same price for inner-tubes but could take longer since the guide won't be there keeping you moving along. With the tubing option you can tube all day (meaning they will shuttle you back up the river for another run). If you want to tube all day its $30 total.

    June 25, 2013

    • Elaine d.

The PINECONE discount which was for the rafting trip is not in effect. For those folks who already paid for the Lickety Split, they will be giving you a refund based on whether you are kayaking or tubing all day. They will issue a full refund to those who decide not to go at all. Having said that, I hope everyone will decide to go tubing or kayaking.....it's going to be super fun either way. And it will give us a chance to support the local economy (even in a small way) which is going to take quite a hit with the water situation this year.

      1 · June 25, 2013

    • Leigh

I think the Kayaking will be better for us because most of us still have the drive home!! It will be fun to get some water time in and then still be home by about 6-7!

HI Everyone...looks like this is going to be VERY fun. I just found out about natural waterslides in the area and I think that will be a MUST DO for some of us on Friday afternoon if we can find them! Please make sure you are signed up for the Lickety-Split as described above and make sure you are at the Pine Cone or at the Kern Lodge unless you are camping at a local campground. Leigh is out of the area with limited cell reception, so she asked me to wrangle some changes to the Kern River dinner teams. We had more people that needed to be added to teams; each team now has 11 people. I updated new teams at the top of the discussion thread here: http://www.meetup.com/Sonoma-County-Wanderers/boards/thread/35160852/0/

If you are not going after all or don't want to be included in our shared dinners, OR if you're going but don't see yourself on a dinner team - please let me know ASAP.

Also, please remember the only thing we will have for reheating food is each room at the Pine Cone has a microwave; we don't know about Kern River Inn. And I expect them to be SMALL microwaves, so a big pan of lasagna may not be the best idea! :)

TEAM 1 - hold on, we'll get started with our planning in the next day or two.
