It's a long weekend in Sequioa National Park. Two days of hiking and a half day on the river before our ride home. I recommend on your ride to Kernville on Thursday you make a day of it and see some of the park! We are taking it easy and staying at the Pine Cone Inn. Please not that we are requesting that you stay all 3 nights if you are planning on staying at the Pine Cone because they are holding the rooms just for us. If you are coming for two nights then I would stay nearby. Though you probably could find a close campground if that's the way you want to go. We also have an alternate motel available once the Pine Cone fills up.
Reserving at the Pine Cone. The Pine Cone (http://pinecone-inn.com/)is holding every room (all 11!) in the joint just for us, for three nights, June 27 – June 30! The rate is $85/room and we are counting on the Wanderers to reserve for all three nights. There are a limited number of rooms (3) with two beds and the rest have a single king. Please make your room reservation at the Pine Cone no later than April 15. If there are any rooms left at that point, we’ll make an announcement to the rest of the group.Note: we do have other accommodations lined up for the over-flow and for those who don’t want to stay for all three nights; we’re just trying to get the Pine Cone filled up first. Here’s the number to call:[masked]-6669. Ask for Ivan, be sure to mention the Wanderers to get the special $85/night rate, and let him know if you want a room with one or two beds. If you call and the Pine Cone is full then please make a comment and I will give you the info on the nearby accommodation. We hope to have a full house in the Pine Cone so we can potlock, wine taste and laugh together. There is a kitchen available to us to warm up our potluck contributions.
Friday: Hiking to two different peaks near Kernville
Saturday: Freeman Creek Trail described as follows:
The pristine Freeman Creek Grove of giant sequoias is well removed from the tourist circuit, treating hikers to the thrill of discovery. Straightforward and well maintained, the trail meets the first giant sequoias well within the first mile, and doles them out in generous helpings all along the way. Handsome, dignified, and well proportioned amidst other large conifers and robust foliage, they are more majestic in this setting than when you find them fenced and surrounded by shutterbugs.

Sunday-River RaftingAs I’m sure you have noticed, we haven’t had a great deal of rainfall this year, which will have an impact on whitewater rafting options this summer. Even so, we’ve got a plan. We are currently “holding” space for the Wanderers on a Half Day Upper Kern (Class 4)white water rafting trip for Sunday, June 30, from 11 am – 3 pm, through SierraSouth. HOWEVER, we won’t know if they will even be able to run this trip until late April because of the water situation. So, what we’ll do is book now for the trip we know they can run, the Lickety-Split Raft Trip(Class 2 – 3), described as “three miles of jam-packed action on Kern River rapids such as Big Daddy, Sidewinder, Freight Train, and Ewings.” If and when the Half Day Upper Kern trip becomes available, Sierra South will let everyone in our group who signed up for Lickety-Split know and give them the option of “upgrading.” The cost for Lickety-Split is $37, the Half Day Upper Kern is $134. Wanderers get a 15% discount on both of them, but you must use the promo code PINECONE when you are checking out. Here is the link to register and pay for the raft trip:
http://reservations.sierrasouth.com/express/reservation/results.jsf?activityIds=49746While it’ll be great if we get to do the Class 4 trip, we’ll still have a ball on Lickety Split, ‘cause that’s how we roll…….Just read that there is a limit on Upper Kern (if we can do it) of 25! So, it'll be first come first served and they'll pull from the folks who signed up and paid for Lickety Split first......
