Hiking at Castle Rock

Do you enjoy the outdoors? How about admiring the beauty of nature? Exercising and making friends at the same time?

Then let's go hiking in the wilderness of Castle Rock! Castle Rock offers some unusual rock formations and amazing panoramic views of the bay area, all within a short driving distance from the Silicon Valley. Afterwards, well go out to lunch somewhere nearby.

Feel free to invite friends. The more the merrier! If you have any questions, please post here or send me a message.

All the details:

When: 10AM, Saturday, September 21, 2013

Where: Castle Rock State Park (15000 Skyline Blvd., Los Gatos, CA 95033). Meet at entrance.

Total length: ~4.7 miles

Total elevation: 1000 ft

Difficulty Level: moderate (This is not a good hike for those with mobility issues.  Some parts of the trail are narrow and it can potentially be tough on your knees and hips when scrambling up and down some stretches of boulders)

Further information on Castle Rock State Park at URL: http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=538

Cost: $8.00 per car day use fee (avoid by parking on Skyline
Blvd.)
Note: We will head out for lunch somewhere nearby after the hike.

Estimated finish time: About 1:00 PM (back at trailhead)
Bring: sunscreen, plenty of water, snacks, layers, good hiking shoes, long pants recommended.

Directions to Get There:

-From Interstate 280 in San Mateo County, take CA 92 west, then turn south onto Skyline Boulevard (CA 35).  Drive about 25.5 miles, to the junction of 35 and 9 (Saratoga Gap). Continue about 2.5 miles further south on 35, to the park entrance on the right side of the road.

- From CA 85 in Santa Clara County, exit Saratoga Avenue. Drive west into Saratoga, then continue west, uphill on CA 9. At Saratoga Gap (junction 9 and CA 35), turn left and drive south about 2.5 miles to the park entrance on the right side of the road.

Lunch location after the hike:
If it doesn't rain like crazy, we will go hiking at Castle Rock State Park and afterwards go to this restaurant for lunch:
Layang Layang
(FYI there is more than 1 Layang Layang, so go to the correct one!)
1480 S De Anza Blvd.
San Jose, CA 95129
(408)[masked]

If it happens to rain heavily tomorrow (which the weather forecast doesn't seem to indicate), then go directly here at 10 AM instead of Castle Rock:
The Original Pancake House
1366 S De Anza Blvd.
San Jose, CA 95129
(408)[masked]

If you have questions or want to confirm in the morning which plan we are going with, you can reach me at (408)[masked] the day of. I'm looking forward to meeting all of you, and the possibility of rain can't put a damper on that!

    **IMPORTANT UPDATE::

    Hi everyone!

An important update regarding our hike today! Due to the popularity of the hike (woohoo!), our original restaurant choice cannot feasibly accommodate our large group. So, here's the updated plan:

I will meet you guys at The restaurant later if that's ok! I slept in late because I had an exhausting week. See you guys around noon?

Anybody want to meet up at Sweet Pea's Cafe at around 9AM? If it is raining, we just stay there for brunch, and if not, we car pool to Castle Rock State Park, do the hiking, and come back to Sweet Pea's for lunch and to pick up our cars. Just a suggestion, if no one is interested I will just show up at the Park.

So I **think** it's supposed to rain tomorrow. Do we have a Plan B in case it does?

    Thanks, Emily, for organizing!
So, if people are up for lunch afterwards, here are a few choices along Saratoga Ave or nearby (I've tried most of them, which are quite good):
    - Japanese Tapas (http://www.yelp.com/biz/dan-japanese-restaurant-san-jose)
    - Malaysian/Thai (http://www.yelp.com/biz/mango-garden-san-jose)
    - Vietnamese (http://www.yelp.com/biz/pho-long-thinh-san-jose)
    - Malaysian (http://www.yelp.com/biz/layang-layang-san-jose)

I haven't tried the following though:
    - Chinese (http://www.yelp.com/biz/hongs-gourmet-saratoga)
    - Indonesian (http://www.yelp.com/biz/indo-cafe-saratoga-saratoga)

Cooking Papa is a popular Chinese restaurant but it's in Santa Clara though (http://www.yelp.com/biz/cooking-papa-restaurant-santa-clara).

There are other options, of course: Raman, Sushi, American, Korean, and even Ethiopian...

    Hope it helps. :)

Love Cooking Papa here myself - great food, fast, and really, really tasty.

Haha, of course, it's HK cuisine. It's usually a long line there though, and after the hike, I don't want to see a flock of hungry birdies turn into angry birds. :P

Do you know how long the trail will take? I also have a dog - might want to take her...

    September 16, 2013

  • Kevin

Does anyone know if dogs are allowed? Would it be okay to bring mine?

Hi Mani, we plan to be there about 2-3 hours, so definitely not an all day event (and we'll pick something that everyone can manage)!

Emily: Which trail do we want to hike? I heard that the standard (hiking Saratoga Gap trail and coming back on the Ridge trail) route is pretty tough and an all day affair.

I will happily drive a car pool from Los Gatos/South San Jose area.
