Our hikes are a great opportunity for you and your dog to socialize with other dogs and people, while enjoying natural settings. All the hikes have been a blast: the dogs have had tons of fun enjoying the outdoors and making new friends.

This is a FREE activity, we generally meet on the first Sunday of every month at different South Bay hiking trails. You are welcome to just drop in and join us.

This month we will go back to one of our favorite hikes... Portuguese Bend Reserve Trail has great ocean views and is very easy to find -- just drive south on Crenshaw Blvd. to where the road ends at Del Cerro Park in Rancho Palos Verdes.

Here is a link to the map - http://goo.gl/maps/90GHl

NOTE: Despite what some GPS maps might indicate, Crenshaw Blvd. does end at Seacrest Drive. There is a barricaded gate just south of there and the "road" (whether indicated as Burma Road or a continuation of Crenshaw) is unpaved and inaccessible.

PARKING: The street parking on Crenshaw closest to the trailhead is marked as permit only ($65 ticket). Either use the parking lot at Del Cerro Park OR park on Crenshaw prior to the posted restrictions (see photo).

Details

• Simply take Crenshaw Blvd. south to where it ends (adjacent to Del Cerro Park).

• Parking will be your biggest challenge, particularly if we have near two dozen participants. Maybe target arrival for 8:50am to accommodate parking and possibly a semi-short walk on Crenshaw to Del Cerro Park if its small lot is already full.

• Do NOT park on Crenshaw in the area closest to Del Cerro Park that is posted as "Permit Only" (see photo). Otherwise, expect a $65 ticket.

• We will meet in the grassy field of Del Cerro Park adjacent to the parking lot.

• By 9:05am, we'll start an easy, short loop of Del Cerro Park. This provides a stunning vista of the Pacific Ocean and is great for smaller dogs.

• Following the Del Cerro Park short loop, we'll enter the Portuguese Bend Reserve Trail to begin the longer hike.

• This is the most challenging hike on our docket... There is a serious elevation drop as we enter (which also means challenging elevation gain at the end).

• Even on a cool day, this will exercise your pups. Bring water to keep your dogs hydrated!

• As this is wildlife habitat, do not allow your dog off-leash in the Reserve.

• Rancho Palos Verdes (and LA County) require a 6-ft maximum leash within the Reserve. Retractible leashes are not allowed.

• Warning: Foxtail grasses are abundant alongside this trail. Please be aware that foxtail can cause serious health problems for dogs if they get embedded between toes; in ears, noses, or private parts; or ingested. [ http://pets.webmd.com/dogs/foxtail-grass-and-your-dog ]

See everyone on the trail!

Please feel free to let your friends know about our hikes.

P.S. - PLEASE BE ON TIME - We usually can't wait more than 5 minutes, because the dogs get restless.

This group welcomes ALL Dogs and their owners, providing activities in natural outdoor settings to help you and your dog become more social and well-balanced.
