Trail Maintenance Hike - Prairie Lakes WMA North Loop

We will maintain ~2.5 miles of Florida National Scenic Trail on the eastern portion of the Prairie Lakes north loop, and mow a short stretch of open prairie on the white-blazed western portion, as shown by the green-highlighted section on the attached map. Hunting is not scheduled in the Prairie Lakes Unit for December 3. Maintenance activities will include installing signs and posts, bridge repair (hammering nails that have come loose), mowing, lopping/cutting branches, painting blazes, and picking up trash. Participants are expected to wear hard hats and safety glasses, which will be provided if you do not have your own gear. Please wear non-skid boots, long pants, and work gloves, and bring drinking water and snacks. Expect the usual Florida hazards such as spiders, mosquitoes, and fire ants, and heat, humidity, and sudden rain showers. If these hazards do not scare you away, meet us at 7:30 a.m. in the NW corner of Sam's Discount Club on W. New Haven Ave to coordinate carpooling, to sign an assumption of risk forms and forms acknowledging the work-related risks (see attached), and for a brief tailgate safety meeting.
