Join us for a hike on the Prairie Lakes Wildlife Management Area Trail. The Prairie Lakes Trails are not in the best of shapes this year, water levels are
unusually high, but their worst is still better than a lot of other trails best. I hoped to do the West or South loop but parts of it are overgrown probably
because the rest is too wet to mow. Instead, we will do parts of the North or East loop and about a mile or so of road walk to get around the wet area, the
total length is about six miles. A lot of it is also in full sun so be sure th bring a hat and sunscreen; plus, since some is a bit weedy, long pants are
suggested. Anyhow, meet at Sam's in Melbourne on Hwy 192 a little East of I-95 at 8:30 AM, the fee to enter the area is six dollars per car so carpool
profusely! The drive down is about fifty miles so we should arrive at the area at about 9:30, If you want to meet at the trailhead, stop at the check
station, pay the fee and wait for us, we will then drive to the trailhead, the parking area at the trailhead is small but we can park on both sides of the
canal and if necessary, park on the road. Plans are to start at the bridge, take the white trail to the junction with the blue trail continuing on the blue
trail to the road, then take the road back to the white trail which will take us all the way back around to the beginning. I'm guessing that we will get to
the boardwalk at about noon so that should be a good spot to have lunch, you will have to detour around a small wet area at the bridge, it seems that they
built it ten feet too short. Bring lunch, snacks and something to drink.
