Re: My project - Shadence.com

Hello my fellow SoCs,

Thank you for the overwhelming responses to my previous email. Though I have responded to each one of the emails individuals, I thought I should share the information with the rest of the group as well. The information shared might not sound technically advanced to some of you, but then honestly the top differentiator/priority of my startup is the higher quality content and intuitive user experience rather than technology. Having said that, the technology frameworks and platforms available have helped me a lot in initiating my startup for just £21 (for domain registration).

So here it goes -
  • Shadence.com is developed using Play framework for Java (backend), Twitter Bootstrap (frontend) frameworks and MySQL (database)
  • The application is hosted on Amazon EC2 (micro-instance) and images are stored in Amazon S3. I am using Free Usage Tier of Amazon
  • The whole thing has costed me nothing till now and the only payout has been for domain registration
  • I was using EC2 for hosting images earlier, but that impacted the application performance. There was a huge improvement in speed when I switched over to Amazon S3. Amazon webservices are awesome!
  • Play is an excellent framework for developing web application and speeded up the development a lot, however its documentation is not good so I had to dig a lot in developer forums
  • Using Bootstrap as frontend framework helped me with the mobile devices as well, as it is responsive by default
  • I only test my application with Chrome, Safari and Firefox. Do not invest anytime in Internet Explorer (the most pathetic of all browsers)
  • The combination of using Play framework for application and Amazon S3 for image hosting is pretty good as the server is running on 640MB EC2 instance, and the performance is very well for that kind of memory (my mobile phone has more memory than my server :-) )
  • The experiences for Shadence.com are identified and collected using manual procedure. I believe that high quality content has to be curated. And even though I can automate the process of identifying experiences going on in London, identifying a unique and interesting experiences and publishing its information on the website will still have to be a manual process. Lets face it, I am no Google.

I hope this has been helpful. Please feel free to share your feedback and comments. Thanks again for your feedback and words of encouragement.

Kind Regards,
Deepak Nayal

Hello my fellow Spring of Coders,

I have been working on my project for some time now and wanted to share it with you. Shadence.com helps you discover unique and interesting experiences in your city (only London for now).

I have developed it using Java Play framework and Bootstrap HTML framework. Both of these are good backend and frontend frameworks respectively, though Play is a low on documentation. Even though, I am not really a developer, with a little amount of head-banging I was able to get my way through and develop the website. Wanted to share it with you, as these frameworks might be helpful for you as well.

Please do check it out and let me know your feedback.

Regards,
Deepak Nayal
