24-Hour Comic Day!

Join us for a Square City Comics first! This year, we will be participating in 24-Hour Comic Day. This means that over a fast and furious 24 hour period, each participant will create a 24-page comic book, from the idea all the way to finish (No cheating and having a comic book pre-written).

Last year, M was the only member brave enough to dare attempt it, and the results were truly impressive! This year, we are all taking the plunge, and I hope to see everyone there.

For our 24HCD headquarters, we will be using my apartment at the Arlington Courthouse. I will share the address with those who say they are attending. We will have a live Google Hangout feed and blogstream going so people can tune in and watch the delirium set in. We will order food, watch Comic Book themed movies, and alternate between drinking beer and coffee. Naps are optional, but not advised because that time still counts against the clock.

We're aiming for an early start on Saturday, but can push it back a few hours if needed. We should still aim to start as early as possible so we have all day Sunday to crash.

So what do you say? DO YOU HAVE WHAT IT TAKES?

This was way fun! Sure I didn't get to complete the challenge, but the working environment really helped to get things moving. I now have a comic I'd like to finish later! Also the riffing on movies was great (Sin City is now absolutely hilarious)!

Hi all! My friend Jade got me interested in doing this whole 24-hour comic thing, so I figured I'd give it a shot this year and try joining you guys! :)

And some practice for framing - Wally Wood's 22 panels that always work:

Hey did you register with the official site as a host? Just curious. http://www.24hourcomicsday.com/

People can register as online individuals, but then it looks like you gotta post online progress pics somewhere. Is it okay if we decide to do that too?

I think we can do that. We will be documenting it with a video feed, but were also hoping to do updates with pictures during the event.

Also, everyone, be sure to send me your email address so I can email you the address where the event is taking place. Also, we can add you to the Square City email list (if you so choose) where we announce new meetings, discuss comics, and share links with interesting articles on the medium.

If for any reason Jade can't make it, I have a Netflix account too. Just in case, lol

I may bring some chips and guac too. I have some avogadros whose numbers are up. (Yuk yuk.)

OK, I'm in. I look forward to meeting you all (again, if you were at the SPX table).
Drink: I'll bring some black, green, and herbal teas if there are others like me who aren't coffee-drinkers (if needed I can bring a kettle to boil water), and will bring some hard cider - a good Autumn drink.
Food: I'm good with desserts. Any requests? Banana or pumpkin bread, pie (pumpkin, key lime, sweet potato pecan...), cake, cookies...?
Movies: Ghost World, Chasing Amy, Watchmen, Spider-Man, Transformers, V for Vendetta, TMNT, Hellboy, Hulk, X-Men 1st Class, Scott Pilgrim, Fantastic 4... can also bring Disney, Pixar and Dreamworks collections if requested (I know they're not quite comic-themed, but Incredibles sorta fits, right...).

I have the Scott Pilgrim BD, so I'll bring it. I'll second pumpkin bread, does that count? Haha....

I can also bring Garfield holidays DVD, for the Halloween episode. A true classic of the 80s.

    Let's see...
For food: I think I'm either going to make a pumpkin chili or some sort of dip (whichever's easier to carry through metro and all).
For drinks: I can also bring a variety of tea. And perhaps non-alcoholic apple cider for those of us with sweeter drink cravings :-P.
Movies: I don't have a lot of my own, but I can borrow from my brother's collection of marvel superhero movies. I also have a Netflix streaming account so we could play something from that too (like Hey Arnold, or Firefly or Carl Sagan's Cosmos or something Halloweeny).

I'll supply the Pepsi! As for food, I'll can bring Mexican casserole.

I have a lot of the same movies you guys do, but I also have Watchmen and all the Ninja Turtle movies as well as a fair amount of anime (Spirited Away, Mononoke, Boogiepop Phantom, Cowboy Bebop, Twelve Kingdoms).

    October 12, 2012

    • Aric C.

      I second 12 Kingdoms!

Still sorting out if I can make the event - is it OK if I've never been to a Square City event before?

Not a problem at all. We're not a especially cliquey bunch. Although to be honest, none of us have very good internal censors, and our conversations almost invariably turn adult-oriented. So unless some Family Guy style dialogue will totally offend you, you won't feel uncomfortable or out of place.

      Great thanks!

    Personally, here's what I'm planning:

Food: I'll probably provide my breakfast quiches which are sausage, egg, and cheese in a small pastry, but I can also make a vegetarian option.

Drink: Variety of soda and juice, and Pumpkin Ale (for the Halloween Spirit)

Film: The Dark Knight, Scream, Kick Ass, Iron Man II, etc. etc. We'll put the films up to a vote during the event.

We're a little over a week away. I thought we should start planning the event. M suggested we do kind of a Potluck to kick it off. Since we are starting in the mid-morning, brunch/lunch Potluck items would be ideal. Please shout out what you plan to bring so we don't have too much redundancy. We will probably have 7 or 8 people when it's all said and done. And when the food runs out we will order pizza/Chinese/sushi, etc.

Also, I would ask folks to bring some libations; some soda (or Red Bull), a sixer or so, if the mood strikes you.

If you have any Blu Rays or DVDs (Comic Book preferred, but given the time in October, mixing in some Horror Movies will be acceptable) that you would like to bring for the movie marathon, shout that out here as well.
