Introduction to Unity Programming: Javascript

Local Unity guru Randy Phillips will demo building a basic 2.5-dimensional movement system, to show how to create a 2D platformer in a 3D environment.  No computers or Unity experience required, c'mon by for the tutorial, or just to hang with other game developers.

Great Meetup, I really enjoyed it!

For anyone interested, I picked up Unity 3.x Game Development by Example Beginner's Guide. It's a fantastic introduction to Unity and game development in general. I also got Unity 3.x Game Development Essentials and Unity 3.x Scripting. I'm super excited to read both!

Thanks for introducing me to Unity Randy!!:-)

Randy did a good job at presenting a very entry level approach to 2D Unity script editing and fielding questions.

Randy's talk was very informative, simple, and easy to follow. He was a little soft spoken, which I felt might have made him hard to hear for people in the back, but the content was great! Looking forward to next month!

Well, it's really up to you as to what you want to bring. If you have Unity installed on said laptop, then you can follow along and program the same thing on your laptop, that way you have it on file for reference. If you don't want to do that, then just a notebook with a pen so you can take notes would probably be good.

My plan is to explain basics in programming, and to make a script from scratch that will apply gravity, make the character walk left and right, and jumping. Simple script all in all, but it is "introduction" to unity programming. You are welcome to bring what you would like to. :P I'm not gonna stop you.

I'm also "hoping" to screen record the entire process and upload it to youtube when finished, assuming audio and video is good enough anyway.

;p Chances are better than nothing. *laughs* Either way I'll be taking notes.

I'm stoked for this. I spend a lot of time doing node.js stuff on the side, but I've never done much game dev. This should be awesome :)

So we shouldn't bother with bringing laptops? Anything we should bring?

You might be nervous but once you get into it, I'm sure you will be just fine. This will be my first meetup event and I am excited and a bit nervous myself but hope to make some really good friends that have similar interests and be able to push me in the right direction.

I'm sure you'll kick butt Randy, sorry to hear about the headache but glad to know you're feeling better. Looking forward to making the meetup tonight!

O-o normally this would be my post saying I'm super excited about the meetup tonight.... but being that this will be my first time hosting, it's more super nervous XD. Didn't help much I woke up with a headache today. Luckily it's gone away almost completely at this point.

Time to try and do a quick run through of the script again XD.

I would love to know the inside and out's of Javascript. Set me up for a spot there. I got the date. see ya all there

  • Randy

    O-o I don't know that I'm a Guru... anyway...

Just to note, the date was changed due to various reasons to the 17th instead of the original 10th. Just noting it here as there was no notification sent from the date change and this will send out an email to most people in the meetup group. (meetup needs to tell people of date changes XD)

    Anyway, C'ya all there. ^__^

We can go ahead and set this up as my unity thing. I guess something like "Introduction to Unity Programming: Javascript". I'd pretty much just be programming a basic 2.5d movement system. (2d platformer in 3d environment)
