Games as Art - How do games cross the boundary between entertainment and art?

How do games cross the boundary between entertainment and art? What makes a game more than just fun?

Come with examples of games that have inspired you artistically, be it visual, aural, a gripping story, or perfectly balanced mechanics.

Meetup will be held at the offices of Riot Games, makers of League of Legends. Riot will provide a short intro talk, but the discussion will be driven by meetup members as always.

Hope to see you there!

It was nice meeting all of you. I met some very cool people, heard some very interesting arguments on the topic, and may have found an interesting place to spend some time once a month. Don't forget, my company IS looking to create our first game, and while it's going to be rather low-key for this run, if you would just like the chance to work on something exciting (no details here, for obvious reasons), then please let me know. We are really looking for artists (concept, modelers, animators), but I'm not going to turn away the potential coding powerhouse. Unity experience preferred. Should be a good time. :)

Tim, my thoughts exactly. Gaming can be so much more than entertainment alone. I think there is so much more to explore and develop.

Wandered out of control here and there, but was a grand old time. I regret that we brought forth all our best points at the very very end of the meet-up, leaving no time for what could have been a great whole-group discussion. Maybe next time we can just continue the discussion ("Games As Art, Part 2")? If interest in other topics isn't as high? It's an idea.

Clayton's presentation was very professional and I greatly enjoyed this topic and the discussion that followed.

i don't know if anyone else is interested in this, but i'd enjoy a discussion on games as an educational tool or an artistic medium and not just as entertainment. i think games can be more than just fun, and i'd like to hear what other people think about that.

Oh alright, I thought Riot wanted to have like their own presentation and all that, so I was worried about stepping on toes and such. *laughs* But yes, that sounds fantastic.

If you'd like, my full time job involves games in education.

Would love to meet up with Mr. Randy, the Unity guru. My company is contemplating using the Unity 3d engine for a project, and we've done quite a bit of research on it. We've played around with it quite a bit, but it would be nice to have some expert commentary on features, and/or experience to maybe explain some things. :)

Graphite Lab and our Springfield Studio [Black Lantern] have worked with educational games for several years. Although most of our titles are directed at younger audiences, I'd be happy to share our experience and interests in using games to educate.

Hey everyone, I'm going to be organizing this event at the Riot offices in Clayton. I want to make this meetup something that everyone in the group drives so please comment or send me some talking points you would like to see covered. I'll post the final discussion topic in October so get me your feedback by the end of Sept.!
