Youth Learning Center Game Jam for Kids

The YLC, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, loves the idea of game jams! They are planning to hold one for their students (kids 8-17), as well as other interested kids from schools around the city. The hope is that the kids will design and implement their own games with tools such as pre-created templates in GameMaker and GameSalad. It would be great to have experienced jammers come by and help out, so each team of kids will have mentors to help them through the process. The jam will take place on one day -- food and drink will be provided, AND free t-shirts for participants. If you are interested in helping, please join up, and if you know kids that are interested in participating, join up too, to be on the list for announcements when registration opens. If any questions, please ask!

Something when wrong while I was doing the paperwork for background check, I think it was do to my net connection being in and out. Also, my wife and I have come down with a late season sinus cold.

Reminder ya'll! There are currently at least 90 kids ready and rarin' to go for this! If you've got friends who may be interested in developing with us, best to poke them now! Paperwork needs to be in to YLC by Wednesday so the background check has time to get through the system! :3

Do you need to have experience with GameMaker and GameSalad for this event, or can you use other help?

I have very little experience with GameMaker and GameSalad... soooo I would say just show up and I'm sure there will be something to do. :)

You don't need experience with those, but they will be the two programs used the most. They are very easy (I'm not a programmer and made a game on both just to see how it works!) We also need tech support, artists, and musicians to help the kids, so there will be something for everyone to do! If you want to work with the kids, however, you MUST have a background check completed with us prior to WEDNESDAY! Email me at [masked] to get the paperwork! Thanks!

The big day is coming quickly! T-shirts and giveaways are here. Software is downloaded on all the computers! We have 106 students registered and unfortunately had to cut it there due to our capacity with the numbers of computers available. We still need more help with programmers, though! If you know GameSalad or Gamemaker or can learn it by Saturday, we need more mentors to help the kids! Email me at [masked] to get the ball rolling. We have to have your background check in to us by Wednesday in order to get it back by Saturday morning. So, please don't delay! If you come on Saturday without your background check complete, you can still help with cleaning up or setting up food! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

We have 68 students registered from all over the city! We need your help! We currently only have 7 volunteer coaches/mentors background checked and ready to go for the event. In order for each team to have their own coach, we need about 10 more! If you are interested and have not already done the background check, please email me at [masked]. We cover the cost! Unfortunately, since we are working with children, the check is a requirement, but YLC will cover the cost of it and it is very simple! Please spread the word! It is going to be a blast!

We already have 12 kids signed up besides our own 8 YLC students and we have not even tapped into the schools! We expect this to be pretty big! If you want to help, please be sure you email me so we can send you our volunteer application. It's short, but we do require a background check since you are working with kids! Shoot me an email: [masked]. Thanks!

I was so happy to meet many of you in person at the Global Game Jam and was blown away by the games that I saw! Thanks for welcoming YLC there. I hope that we will be able to see many of you as mentors/professionals for our kids at the Youth Game Jam in April! Email me at [masked] if you would like to help or stop by YLC between 10-6:30pm any Monday through Friday for a tour and check out the program1

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
