Summer workshop: Graphics with D3.js

Our second hands-on summer workshop. Bring your laptop and learn how to make visualizations using D3.js. Note: This is an introductory workshop.

We'll be in room 213 (A&B) in the Farrell Learning and Teaching Center. http://fltc.wustl.edu/. The room is bigger, but parking is not as convenient as before.

Attendance will be limited to around 40.

Agenda:

6:30 - 7:00 - Eat, drink, socialization (in all the geek glory), and set up laptops

7:00 - 7:45 - D3 presentation/overview/tutorial

7:45 - 8:30 - Hands-on/D3 hacking

It was a very good introduction to the topic.

The introduction was very thorough. I hope there will be a Java script class and CSS class for further help on coding.

There is metered parking in Hudlin park, Euclid, Taylor, or in the garage (more expensive). The meters run until 7PM. The street parking on Scott is scarce these days due to construction, but there are some.

A few notes for the Wednesday workshop:

    1) I am looking for a larger room. Assume we will be in the same room unless another announcement is made, though.

    2) Please go to the following link to prepare for the meetup: http://www.dataschemata.com/1/post/2013/07/preparing-to-use-d3.html The more you can get setup beforehand, the sooner we can start the workshop. 3) We will start at 6:30 with food, visiting, and assisting with setting up laptops.

    See you Wednesday.

Will Crossfilter be part of this as well? I have a decent handle on d3.geo, but really need to understand crossfilter to make that effective. Also, Terraformer could help with accessing some live map servers (https://github.com/Esri/Terraformer) if you want to do some d3.geo work.

From the survey of individuals, many people are not familiar with D3, so this is going to be an introduction to it. Perhaps you can give a presentation on d3.geo or crossfilter later in the year.

Here's the D3 related package that I mentioned. I thought I'd post the link though of course we might not cover it in the workshop: https://github.com/mikedewar/d3py

I'll try to get it integrated into the virtual image we are putting together for the scikit-learn workshop.
