Buckthorn Bashers is intended to be a volunteeer organization that will help state parks and other organizations interested in habitat restoration in the area control some of the invasive tree and plant species on their land. Buckthorn, is a non-native tree and perhaps the biggest threat to our forests as it often gets so thick that it chokes out almost all the native trees that are trying to grow in the understory. There is no prior experience that is needed to join this group. It will be an educational experience as well as a volunteer experience. While the main focus of the group will be on volunteer work, I could see it evolving into a group that does some camping together at the state parks where we are working.

I majored in conservation in college and worked in the field for 5 years. I am currently in graduate school for Sustainable Community Development. I have quite a bit of experience removing bucthorn, but certainly encourage other people who are knowledgeable to join the group and share their expertise as well.
