The Kayaker Jamboree was a great hit for those that attended last summer. It is time we begin laying the groundwork for the event for this coming year.
Please remember to put on your 2009 calendar the Kayaker Jamboree on the Norwalk Islands. The date is not set yet, but in 2008 it was on the weekend of Aug 2 We are open to suggestions on dates. We are looking for Feedback regarding dates, activities, the Island clean up (should we do it again), how can we promote the event, was the camping a good idea, what can we do to make it more interesting, etc. Please feel free to discuss ideas here. Let's start with the date, but do not limit The discussion to that. Through out any idea or criticism you have. We will flush things out over the next few months. Here is last years event postings: Aug 1 http://www.meetup.com... Aug 2 http://www.meetup.com... Aug. 3 http://www.meetup.com... Edited by Peter on Apr 9, 2009 1:37 PM |

I am thinking Aug. 1 and 2 again, but I want to see when Kayak for A cause will be held. I also want to have the event in coordination with other kayak groups so I am open to input from them. I hope this event will be 10 times bigger then last year.
But, to do that I must rely on everyone doing their part to get the word out. |

I will put the Jamboree on the Kayak Adventure calendar when a date is finalized, and we'll plan to come again. The first weekend of August looks good, as there'll be a full moon on Wednesday the 5th, so there will be plenty of night lighting. It was a fun time last year. This time we'll plan to overnight.

Great minds think alike. I had just asked George to Back Channel to you.
How about a weekend with a Full Moon. We would like it to start on Friday if possible and end on Sunday afternoon. Let's post ASAP. These camping events are things I would like to put on the calendar as soon as possible to ensure a larger turn out. w Us at Hudson River and Beyond are EXCITED and want to put this on our "Bucket List"! I think Aug 6 is a full moon (i.e at 00:57 AM GMT, just past midnight of the evening of Aug. 5 as most would think of it, so Aug 1 & 2 are near full and good days for the camping. July 31 is Friday.
The weekend of Aug. 8 & 9 are just as good since the full moon is exactly mid week. It might be slightly brighter on Aug. 8 & 9. Look at this...http://stardate.org/n... P.S. 00:57AM GMT is 8:57AM PM EDT, I think, but I am not sure if we need to add a differential to the time for our location...it is my presumption that we do not adjust at all, but we do add one hour for Daylight savings, thus I think the full moon is actually at 1:57 AM EDT on Aug 6. We should definately do it again. Last year was great and it can only get better year after year. I'm looking forward to it.

Peter: Vikki and i will be happy to help out in anyway we can
i hope we can get press coverage this year. we have the opportunity to help the environment while we set an example to the others who share our aquatic playground. lets show them kayakers are a positive force in the community, if people see others cleaning up it sends a think green reinforcement and it also gives the media an opportunity to show a good news segment |

i hope we can get press coverage this year. ...help the environment ...kayakers are a positive force in the community... good news segment Yes, great idea. I will try to get News12 to cover it, and I will send press Release to Stamford and Norwalk papers. I think what will make the difference is the number of kayakers in attendance. If we get over 100 kayakers, then it will be news worthy, under 20 and it will be just a group out camping trip. We have to remember...to leave no trace. We have to leave the island as we found it...or cleaner. If we get 100 kayakers, we can really trash the island, but we can also clean the island better then it was when we got there...and not just the beach area like we did last year. |

Peter: Vikki and i will be happy to help out in anyway we can 1) Spread the word to Kayakers, shops, outfitters, etc. 2) Organize your group to come This is a grass roots events. There will be no real collective organization. We need to get groups to form their own camp-pods. Each pod would be responsible for their own members, organizing when to meetup, where to park, paddle over, camp, food, etc. Like last year SKG will reserve the island. We will collect money on the island for the rental fee. It was about $5 per person Edited by Peter on Jan 22, 2009 2:41 PM |

Since I was not here last year, How many can comfortably put tents on the island?
Set a number of RSVP for the second year. That way we can reach our goal and it will be a success. Confirm the date as soon as possible. I think you can count on at least 12 to 20 from our group. I have a pretty good sense so far of who will not back out. Oh, I am getting very excited about summer! Vikki |
