Explore Data: data science + data visualization

Details

Hello everyone,

We have discussed some theoretical/practical topics related to NLP and Data Science in previous meetups. One of the challenges is to bring data to life and make it easy to explore and extract insights. This is where data science and data visualization meet. This meetup is dedicated to data visualization with a touch of both theoretical and application aspects.

Schedule:

• 18:00 - 18:20: Mingling

• 18:25 - 18:30: Welcoming presentation

• 18:30 - 18:45: Talk 1

• 18:45 - 20:15: Talk 2 + break + Talk 3 + Q&A

• 20:15 - 20:45: Mingling

Talk 1: "Data Science at Meltwater" By Babak Rasoulzadeh

This talk will be presented by Babak Rasoulzadeh, Managing Director of Data Enrichment Team at Meltwater (http://www.meltwater.com/).

Abstract: TBA.

Talk 2: "Data Visualization" By Roelof Pieters

This talk was supposed to be presented byJay Solomon, the Founder of Augify (http://www.augify.com/) initially. Unfortunately, due to some urgent matters, Jay will not be able to present it. Therefore, Roelof will present. This talk will be about Data Visualization at the high level, from theory to commercial applications.

Abstract: TBA.

Talk 3: "DataVis: From Data to Pixels" by Roelof Pieters

This talk will be presented by Roelof Pieters, PhD student at KTH (http://www.csc.kth.se/~roelof/) and Data Science consultant (http://www.graph-technologies.com/).

Abstract: Data science and data visualization both seem to have the similar aim of providing meaning, insights, and explanations out of data. In practice however they are often complete opposites: One of utmost detail, numbers, and math, the other, one of reductionism, redundancy, and visual design.

The talk will give a short overview of the academic field of data visualization (DataVis), as well as give some practical advice on “doing” datavis, picked up from Roelof's own work (and sometimes failures :P) as a data science consultant. The focus of the talk will be on graph visualizations and graph algorithms.
