Courtyard Miami Beach South Beach (map)
The date for the first meeting of the Street Photography Club of Miami has been scheduled for Monday, October 3rd at 7PM at the Courtyard by Marriott in the heart of South Beach.
We're just starting so bear with me and I think we can all create something very useful and fun.
The purpose of the monthly meetings is to learn and to expand our creativity, and those meetings will be the main focus of our club. The basic format for all our monthly meetings will be workshop style so we can all learn something every time we meet. I would like to have maybe 4-5 members sign up in advance to bring 10 recent photographs they took to show at the meeting and receive feedback. I'm working on the feedback structure and will discuss more at the first meeting.
We will discuss also the work of classic and famous street photographers to learn about the history and evolution of street photography. We will all be able to share our experiences on the the streets. Knowledge of basic DSLR camera use is expected.
I expect the meeting to last from 7 to 8-30 pm. We could all go grab something to eat afterwards . There are a lot of restaurants nearby in SoBe. There is parking on the streets but the best bet is the parking garage on Collins and 16th,a block away from the hotel.
Since there are charges for using the conference room I am requesting a 10$ contribution to help out with the costs of the meeting. Eventually we will have an annual membership fee for club members who want to attend the educational, workshop style, meetings. I want to have at least three meetings before deciding on the membership fee to make sure everyone likes the format and make suggestions. Of course, the meetup website is free to all members and all members can post pictures and participate in the discussions for free. All location shooting meetups we do will also be free.
The agenda for the our first meeting includes :
1-Member Introductions
2-Description of Club purpose and rules, including membership
3-Basics of Street Photography including: color vs. BW, wide lens vs. zoom, how to take pictures of people, crop or not crop etc.
4-View and discuss photos from famous street photographers
5-View and discuss member's photos ( if available and if time permits)
Please RSVP only if you're certain you can make it.
I appreciate your suggestions to make this a great experience for everyone.
Please email me with questions or suggestions to make this the best Street Photography Club in the world.
Thanks!!
Juan
Thanks Ron. I would like to be able to show some of the member's photographs so we would need a more quiet space, maybe a photo studio or gallery.
Ok Juan,
wish I could think of something on that order, but I don't know Miami to well. Sorry I can't help on this one, but I thought the initial meeting would be more of a meet and greet with a bit of discussion in the mix. Good luck in finding that quiet spot. Hopefully I may be of help with something else later in the group meetings.
Many Panera restaurants have private rooms for meeting that they do not charge for and would probably not be too noisy. I'm not familiar with the ones in Miami-Dade, but that might be an option. (Also, I'm curious as to why the RSVPs are closed until Sept 5?)
Hi Joe, if they have private rooms that might work out well. I will definitely look into that. Thanks for the suggestion. As far as the RSVP's, it is not open because the meeting is not confirmed. I want to make sure the date and venue are confirmed before everyone starts committing to it.
If unable to find a space to meet at first I think it would be a great opportunity for some night photography and sharing tips on exposure settings etc. Maybe a well lit park would work for now.
What area in Miami are you looking for places? I would be glad helping you.
Hi Marilena, preferably the area of Design District, Midtown-Wynwood maybe SoBe. Let me know if you find something.
I researched a lot of places for our meeting. restaurants, libraries, community centers etc. Each place has some sort of restriction and all of them charged a fee of some sort. The facilities at the Courtyard fit perfectly the style of meeting I want to have which is workshop style. Chairs, projector, screen, pens , notes, water station etc is all provided by them. of course, if eventually the group gets larger and we need something different I will try to find a different location
the 10 images are printed or digital on USB for projection?
I do not want prints. It will have to be a digital jpg file in a USB flash drive so we can see it on the screen. Preferably no photoshop or cropping, just the image as it was taken.
Just to clarify, I am requesting a $10 contribution to help out with the costs. It is not a mandatory fee.
I would love to come and will confirm later in the week. Its a pity is in SB though as parking there for 2 hours is about $6 and that time in the evening there is a lot of traffic.
Regards ideas for this workshop or future ones. As this is street photography and many people have smart phones with varying quality cameras I think it would be interesting to also discuss cameras like iPhone and some of the photo apps. In London there is an Instagram exhibition which has some amazing creative work.
Park in the municipal parking on 17 street... $1 per hour
I am unable to attend this time, But hope all of you have a great time ...:)
I am unable to make it. I live in South Beach and the drive over there at the end of rush hour would be terrible.
