"The Dharma Bums" by Jack Kerouac. Demonstrates the freedom and enthusiasm of an early (1950's and on) Buddhist movement called the "Beat (beatific) Generation" - the beginnings of an American Buddhist lifestyle as expressed in literature, poetry and music. Captures the excitement and adventure of a new perception of living. Available from Amazon download, and perhaps a local library.

Great suggestion! Despite the title, I think this could be the best basic introduction to Buddhism. Written by two Western Buddhist teachers and scholars, it tells the story and outlines the path in a very friendly, but thorough way. Good refresher, too. I just recently downloaded it from Amazon.
