Welcome to SumUp’s first mobile meetup!

At SumUp, we strongly believe in the power of native apps, but we also need to make sure the core parts of our apps work correctly and consistently across platforms. Our iOS and Android engineers will share some of our learnings and best practices in two talks:

========================
Title: “Server-Driven Screens”
Speaker: Vince, Android Engineer at SumUp

For complex UI flows, it quickly becomes challenging to keep all clients in sync. At SumUp, we decided to move some of our tricky screen-routing logic to the backend, serving screens dynamically, regardless of component (app/SDK) or platform (Android, iOS, or even Windows).

After introducing the server-driven solution we are applying at SumUp, we will discuss the benefits of such an approach in general, as well as the possible limitations.

========================
Title: “Cross-Platform Data Models and API using gRPC-ProtoRPC”
Speaker: Sebastian, iOS Engineer at SumUp

With the help of gRPC and Protobuf, we managed to define a shared data model plus API endpoints that can be used across clients apps (iOS, Android, Elm/Web) and the backend (Go). Per platform, local client stubs are auto-generated to access both model and API in the preferred platform language. We walk you through the process of selecting this technology stack, our tooling, best practices, and lessons learned.

Join us in our shiny new office, and bring a friend and questions. Free snacks and drinks will be served!
