February Field Trip

SWFWMD has been doing a good job with land management in this area and we may be able to see the Pondspice, Litsea aestivalis, which has been suffering from the Laurel Wilt disease in the northeast portion of the state.  Pondspice is listed as endangered by the state of Florida, Florida Natural Areas Inventory and is rare throughout its range within the southeastern United States.  It typically blooms in the early spring.

We will use a pickup to access some of the better locations and hike about 2-3 miles from the road.  This will get us into some of the more remote and interesting areas.

Ok I guess I will miss this one. Still can't find Hayes Rd and I thought this area was Odessa not Land O Lakes.

Sherrie, I noticed MapQuest had me going to somewhere on Hwy 41 which was miles from the entrance. I knew where it was located so I didn't follow MapQuest. Next time, let me know and perhaps we can meet somewhere and you can follow me.

This was a fantastic field trip. We saw the pondspice in bloom, as well as butterworts, bladderworts, sundews and much, much more.

Hi All.. I am just learning about the Suncoast Native Plant Society, I hope it is okay to attend this meetup without already being a member. That said, I can't wait to meet you all and learn more about your mission, we love the outdoors and are thankful for people willing to share their passion and knowledge!

Jeni, please join us. These field trips are so fun and educational and you could not meet a group of nicer people who are more than willing to share their expertise and passion for plants.
