SWFWMD has been doing a good job with land management in this area and we may be able to see the Pondspice, Litsea aestivalis, which has been suffering from the Laurel Wilt disease in the northeast portion of the state. Pondspice is listed as endangered by the state of Florida, Florida Natural Areas Inventory and is rare throughout its range within the southeastern United States. It typically blooms in the early spring.
We will use a pickup to access some of the better locations and hike about 2-3 miles from the road. This will get us into some of the more remote and interesting areas.
