Keith's dome and Echo Peak est. 12-13 miles and around 3000 ft gain

  • September 28, 2013 · 8:00 AM

one pic gives you and idear what terrain we will encounter during the hike

Start time    8AM

Distance:  12-13 miles

Elevation Gain:  est. 3000 feet

Difficulty:  Advanced (depending on your hiking level)

Meetup Fee $ 1

Group Size, Limited to 12 due to permit

*****  Important notes*****

Make sure to read all the details about the hike

this is not a beginner hike, you should have hiked at elevations of 8000 plus feet  before, and hiked 10 plus miles with 2000 or more elev. gain lately.

I have done part of this route but not all of it, therefore I don't know all the terrain we will encounter, but there will be off trail and bouldering, etc.

****   Off trail hiking. about 2 -4 miles will be cross country*** that can be anything from going over granite slabs, some short scrambles up / down,  Boulder fields big and small ones, scree, through some wooded areas, .......... you get the idear.

Meeting Point:

at the Echo lake parking lot, the big one above the lake,

Est. driving time from Walnut Creek around 2 hrs 45  / 160 miles

http://goo.gl/maps/Dzgwk

there should be a sign for echo lakes from hwy 50, you turn left and follow the road for about 0.6 miles , then you turn left again (you should notice a snow park lot on your right), and go about a mile until you hit the big parking lot,

(if you hit Echo Summit on hwy 50 you went to far)

Waiver. please review, no need to print I will bring a sign in sheet.

Route We start the hike at Echo lakes, follow the PCT along lower and upper echo lake , after about 4.5 miles we leave the trail and go cross country up to Keiths Dome, From Keiths Dome we head towards Triangle lake (but we don't decent all the way down to the lake) traverse above the lake, until we find the trail / use trail going up to Indian Rock and then cross country to Echo Peak, we retrace our steps, back down the use trail and at the triangle lake jct we head back down towards the Echo lakes until we hit the Pct and return back to the parking lot.

Closed hike, you have to answer my questions which will pop when you rsvp for the waiting list., I want to make sure you all know about off trail, rock scramble etc.

no answers to my questions means you won't be added, (unless I do know you )

What to bring, all of you should have done similar hikes in the mountains and know how to prepare,

plenty of water, food, snacks, etc.

Weather for trailhead area , low40 high 58 and sunny, up on and around the peaks it will be cooler and it could be breezy.

be prepared for a chilly morning, I would recommend to throw in some gloves, warm hat, scarf in your pack, dress in layers, it may feel warmer later on. (if you get cold easy)

Group Effort,  for most of the hike I have to ask that nobody goes ahead,

Carpools, I have room for 2 or 3 from Walnut Creek

I may cancell this hike if I do not find anyone to carpool with me

Make sure that your meetup e-mail settings set up that you will receive any updates I mail out.

I can take one more (total of 4) from Los Gatos/Sunnyvale/Palo Alto area..meet at Los Gatos Park and Ride at 3:30am and you've got a seat.

I'm leaving from San Francisco (Outer Richmond) and wouldn't mind riding with someone, but getting to Los Gatos doesn't seem practical. If someone needs a last-minute ride and can make it to SF by 4:15AM so I may be on the road no later than 4:30AM, I wouldn't mind having a navigator (and someone to nudge me awake). Just try to let me know soon (by sending a meetup email with cell phone # so I may get back to you, and I'll check my email before getting to bed hopefully ASAP and after getting up @ 3:30AM).

Hmm. Its looking a little late to get an open spot, but in the unlikely event that I get one this afternoon, I would probably rather drive up today and try to camp someplace nearby than start driving by 4AM. Anybody know of any nearby campground with any likelihood of late walk-in availability?

I read on the Meetup blog that they just eliminated the manual waitlist (only automatic) and replaced it with the current feature for notification of open spots. I don't know how this works for organizers. :/

gotta love meetup, argghh, they change stuff for the hell of it, did away with color options for hike write up's as well. manual is not all gone, since I can set the number of attendees and if I keep it at one I can still add manually, but I did see the change they made. just don't know why the questions don't come up.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
