The NYC Surfrider Foundation Chapter is doing something new for 2014. If you made it to our January meeting, you joined us to learn about clean water monitoring in and around NYC from NYC Water Trails (http://www.nycwatertrail.org/) founding member, Rob Buchanan. Continuing this new format, we’ll have more awesome guest talks from the incredible people that make up our community.
February 12th, at 7:00 PM, you’ll hear from a very special guest, Michael Halsband (http://www.michaelhalsband.com/). Michael has been a long-time member of the surf community. In 2005, he published SURF BOOK (http://michaelhalsband.com/SurfBook.html) with Joel Tudor. To get you excited about the event, here are a few words from Michael,
SURF BOOK is a portrait of the contemporary surf Culture through the people who shaped it stylistically and technologically. Joel Tudor and I captured our love of surfing and appreciation for all . He took me on the path he was taken on by Donald Takayama, Nat Young, and many others who introduced him to the surf culture around the world which embraced him and which I was able to document through his relationships.
I am going to talk about how our collaboration began and how it changed my perspective on the culture as I traveled around the pacific ocean with Joel who introduced me to everything he had been exposed to.
We have the ability to manifest our dreams into reality. I explore to the fibers of whatever world interests me: touring with The Rolling Stones and AC/DC, a series of Nudes with Sex industry workers, and the Surf Culture, and how that ties into what we have created on the east coast not only a way to surf here by dreaming it up, but an entire culture to support it.
