What we’re about
Sustainable Capitol Hill is a network of neighbors, businesses and community groups dedicated to making Capitol Hill a sustainable community and a vital neighborhood - one with strong connections between people, place and the local ecosystem.
We host monthly events for folks to meet neighbors, learn a skill, and become just a bit more sustainable along the way. We are also currently heading one main project: The Capitol Hill Tool Library.
The Capitol Hill Tool Library is similar to a book library, but loans tools instead of books. Imagine borrowing a food dehydrator, a ladder, a fishing rod, much like you would borrow a book from SPL. Imagine learning how to fix your broken toaster, building a worm bin, preserving your summer bounty. Enjoy a local community of knowledgeable fixers, tool lending, and workshops at the new Capitol Hill Tool Library.

See all- Intro to Woodshop: Safety and BasicsCapitol Hill Tool Library, Seattle, WA
Learn how to pick the right power tools for your woodworking project – and how to use them safely! No prior experience needed for this free class.
- Due to overwhelming interest, we ask that you please RSVP here on Meetup.* If the event is full or the time doesn’t work for you, have no fear — we will host this event again in future months!
We’ll cover the basics of power saws, drills, and sanders, and best practices for working in a shared woodshop. You’ll get familiar with the tools we have out on the shop floor: our miter saw, band saw, table saw, drill press, and belt sander.
This class should give you the confidence and fundamentals to get started on your own projects; just come by and use the woodshop any time the tool library is open!
Please wear close-toed shoes and avoid dangling hair, clothing, or accessories. Make sure you’ve created a MyTurn account beforehand so that you can sign our waivers.
*Current Sustainable Capitol Hill volunteers can always join this intro (i.e. current tool library volunteers can join even if RSVPs are full and there's a waitlist, because all volunteers are encouraged to build their woodshop confidence).
- Security Radio 101Capitol Hill Tool Library, Seattle, WA
Learn how to use the Baofeng UV-5R as logistical and security organizers at actions. We will outline FCC laws for MURS, GMRS, and HAM channels. Please purchase a radio beforehand if you are able.
---
This course will cover most relevant functions and operation of a standard UV-5R radio. UV-5R is an easy, accessible, affordable device of low/mid quality. Most radios can only transmit on a small, specialized range of channels (bands). The advantage of the UV-5R is that it can be unlocked to access many of these bands. This makes it the preferred choice for new radio operators.
Bands are defined by the Federal Communications Commission. We will cover two bands. MURS (5 channels) and GMRS (22 channels). If you bring your own radio, arrive early and the instructor will program these channels into your device. We will discuss best practice when communicating over radio frequencies and how to employ effective messaging techniques.

Contact Devorah at 206-353-4525 if you will need a loaner baofeng, or would like to purchase one from her at the event ($25) If you would like to purchase your own radio, UV-5R radios are available for about $20 on AliExpress, Amazon or from the distributor.
