SydPHP March 2012 Meetup

This meeting for march we are taking some steps to bring the topics suggested during our February social gathering to the group, and go back to basics on some general programming topics, while pushing forward to PHP 5.3 and 5.4 versions.

We'll be covering two main topics:

* Web server alternatives
* Environment setup

This will give us a great base to work from to explore new interactive sessions in which we guide you through code over the coming months.

We had some great feedback and topic suggestions during the February social, and we hope to get more feedback each month as we push through these topics and more!

In addition to this PHP talk, we're pleased to welcome Brad Lorge to speak about Javascript and PHP Security, with some demos and cool (maybe scary) security details for us all. Its going to be a great talk, and we're keen to see what he has for us!

Join us on 29th March for a good intro to setting up a good local development environment, and going through the basics of object orientation and various web server / environment alternatives!
We hope to see you there!

    Good meetup. I thought the first talk was too long and made the same point over and over again without actually explaining or demonstrating it once. Rambling jargon. More structure, less talk. Always a good option. Choose a good example, demonstrate it. Then just mention the remaining (almost identical) points without repetition and you will cut the talk in half leaving some time for proper audience participation towards the end. I didn't want to ask any questions because I was afraid I would extend the talk by 10 minutes further overtime! Chose one or two points. Make them reasonably well and hand over to either the audience or the next talk. I don't want to say I could do better because I couldn't. Presenting isn't easy and I struggle with it. But SydPHP could toughen up a bit. Second presentation was tight.

    Loved both talks and looking forward to part 2 of the nginx server.
    Hope there's plans for another talk on security with the focus on ethical hacking so that we can learn ways to seek out vulnerabilities in our web applications and server systems in order to make them more secure when going into production.

    Good meeting. I usually feel like I'm drinking from a firehose at these sessions but there was very good stuff there. Brad clearly knows his onions and through a load of info our way. I'm hoping I caught a few morsels.

    Graham kicked off a series of "beginner" php sessions which looks like it will be very useful (and to be honest more like my level. If you are coding in php or just vaguely interested you should be at these meetings

    Updated our description of the event to include a talk by Brad Lorge on Javascript and PHP security, with some Demos. Brad will be giving a talk during our meetup this month.

    Don't miss it!!

We just grab a coffee and speak French. Some people have been coming every week for months... it creates a kind of warmth to the group.
