Socrates Cafe Moderated Discussion

This meeting will be a moderated discussion (with no formal talk at the start). We'll choose the topic together on the night and you're invited to participate (or to sit back and enjoy the conversation, if that's your preference). No homework or prior reading is necessary - just come prepared to be open-minded.

TRANSPORT: Train is highly recommended - with a very easy thirty second walk from the nearest station (once the traffic lights change). Alternatively, there are a VERY limited number of parking spots at the venue, but you must be a member of the Club to use them - contact the venue for more details ([masked]).

ARRIVAL: Enter the building and head straight up the stairs / escalator. You will have to sign in as either a guest or become a member. You can become a member for the measly cost of $5. Once you've sorted that out, grab yourself a drink, and find us in the function room to the right of the sign-in table. (If you're arriving by car, the arrival is slightly different... ask the club about this.)

TOPIC: Everyone is welcome to suggest a topic - just write it down on the list when you arrive. Brevity is required - you must limit your topic to ten words or fewer, and please consider that one-word topics can make for excellent conversation. Please also try to leave assumptions out of the question (eg, do not ask "why do we think..." as it presumes that we all think the same way - which is highly unlikely!).

FOOD & DRINK: As we are getting the room for free, it would be great to support the club by buying a drink - they're sold at club prices, which means they're very cheap. You're also invited to join us for dinner at the same venue afterwards - at around 8:30pm. Meals are also very affordable. I have asked that they provide for vegetarians/vegans, as this is not a standard on the menu, and they're happy to do that.

Please do remember to keep your RSVP accurate - it helps me plan properly so you have a good time!

Hope to see you there.

Great meetup! a phrase to summarize my take on the discussion las night "There needs to be some level of inmorality for a society to function well"

This section is not the forum however. It is for things to do with attendance, venue, feedback on that side. Forum for debate & discussion content is on Discussion board please..

Socrates is great - format is the best - New venue in Redfern is convenient.

Great to b e back chatting with like minded souls and the moderation excellent as usual! Summation was a trite briefer than normal;!

The two rooms used need some portable club screening I suggest to deflect the unbearable noise even though the floors are carpeted...!!
The venue although new and squeaky clean is a paltry kitchen serving banal meals (albeit my mate says they are only $10 on Tuesday!) but you can buy a schooner for $385 once you join as a $5 PA member! it is the surly manner of the Serbian ex gestapo waiter that prevented us from joining tables afterwards to enjoy a bountiful camaraderie!
Good work gang looking forward to nest!

I think you did well to find a decent venue, close to public transport, with good and reasonably priced food (I heard they put on an extra chef last night to cope with the crowd). It's not as if Sydney is awash with possibilities like that...!

I only found it because it was suggested by one of our members! People made a lot of great suggestions and I've been checking them out - so thanks to everyone. I'm still keeping my eyes open for other ideas, because you just never know... The food isn't gourmet, but it's cheap and they were very accommodating.

Thank you to the organisers. Look forward to the next meeting.
Good discussion but challenged by the noise of too many people in one room making it difficult to hear and one 'unsettled' attendee.

  • Raúl

That was great, Katharine - thank you. I'll make sure I'm able to stay for the entire session next time, as last night I left early and felt I missed out.

Well moderated. Everyone who wanted to say something was able to.

It was well organised, catering well for an interesting range of surprisingly different people with their own approaches and ideas.

Can anyone tell me what the nearest station is? Is it actually redfern?

    February 26, 2013

    • Flora

It is across the road from Redfern station

      1 · February 26, 2013

    • Katherine

If you're walking up from one of the platforms at Redfern Station, turn right at the concourse (ie, top of stairs) and walk out the exit at the far end. If you're coming from the Eastern Suburbs line, it's the gate on the right at the top of the escalators. The building you want is the one just across the road at the pedestrian crossing, on the right of the laneway. Head upstairs.

What is it with all the atheists in this group? I find these people very intimidating, & you often think you have all the answers - the left, has become the new right, in terms of the lefties imposing all their supposedly liberal-minded restrictions

    February 5, 2013

    • JD

If it's true that the left has become the new right, I foresee insuperable difficulties in finding the way to the new venue.

Marijana writes that she is troubled by people with Answers. But isn't Philosophy all about asking Questions, and not being afraid to challenge even our own cherished notions? I truly hope so, for that's what I expect from a Socrates Discussion.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
