***Philosophy Circle is having a temporary break! Hopefully will resume meetings soon, and probably will move them to Sundays. Apologies, everyone. ---- Adrian***

Sydney Philosophy Circle is a fortnightly discussion group that's been running since the start of 2007. It began life as the Russoc discussion group (of Sydney University) in August 2004.

Anyone with the remotest interest in philosophy (whatever that word might mean) is welcome to attend.

The usual agenda is to discuss a different topic/author/book/essay each meeting (see the list of previous topics in the message board section for some indication of what we've talked about).

Normally someone will give a short 5-20 minute speech to stimulate conversation. Discussion is then carried out in a formal timed manner to give participants equality of speaking opportunity. The emphasis really is on discussion rather than being lectured to. Meetings run for 1.5 to 2 hours, and dinner usually follows.

Announcements of future meetings are made on the SydPhil mailing list (http://lists.arts.usyd.edu.au/mailman/listinfo/sydphil), and at the Meetup website.

If there's anything you'd like to discuss or hear about, or if you're able to give a presentation on any philosophical topic, we'd love to hear from you.

Location: --

We usually meet in the members bar of the Gaelic Club. The easiest way to get there is to catch a train to Central station, and exit on Chalmers Street. The club is a short walk away (64 Devonshire Street, Surry Hills), and next door to the Madison Hotel.

Please note: there are two entrances -- one to a ground level pub (we're *not* there), and the other to a flight of stairs. Climb up the stairs (or take the elevator), and you'll eventually get to the secluded members bar.

Look for a group of people with notepads and books who are taking it in turns to speak. Usually we'll be armed with the Oxford Companion to Philosophy, and a bell. Probably we'll be *out on the terrace*.

What members are saying

If this group discussed "How to buy a bus ticket" it would be riveting. I almost don't want to tell you how much fun it is as attracting too many people would spoil it.

 because its da bomb !
