TEDx Events Across New Mexico Message Board › Discussion about the high drop out rate in schools.
|A former member||
This meetup will be held on Saturday, April 28th at 11:00 am at the North Domingo Baca Multigenerational Center and is listed at the Philosophy meetup at:
One out of every three ninth graders in NM drops out before graduation. Some stats say there is a drop-out rate closer to 50%.
In preparation for this meeting, you will need to go to the links below, watch the video and read the article from the AZ Republic.
Some questions to ponder are:
What is the root of the problem?
Who pays the price ultimately?
What can be done?
What are the implications for our society now and for the future of our country?
What can be said about the level of maturity in these students? What does that say about our society?
What part does boredom by the student play in this problem and what does it say about how they are being challenged?
Should there be a new model for teaching by utilizing Kahn University and other online, free education?
Are we teaching them the value of spending their time wisely?
Should their be cookie cutter education vs. individual learning?
How do you feel about how our leaders responded to the students? Are they going in the right direction?
The discussion is open to teens and young adults as it would enlighten us on the subject from their perspective.
Please either send me an e-mail, contact me at 504-0785 or sign up at the philosophy meetup site.
If you want pizza during the event, please let me know.
Hope to see you there! It should be a good discussion.
