Phonegap mobile app development - revolution or trend?

18:30 -   gathering

19:00 -   presentations and questions

~20:30 - fun

Development of mobile apps have always suffered from a problem of multiple code bases and platforms.

With the new HTML5 standard, together with Phonegap framework, and Javascript frameworks such as Sencha Touch, Appcelerator and JQuery Mobile, the ability to create mobile apps with almost a single code-base is becoming better and faster.

Or is it?!

Many have questioned this method regarding native look-and-feel, gesture recognition, smoothness, phone features, and more.

We are here to find out: are these real obstacles? Can they be overcome easily? What about hybrid solutions?

One thing we can say, if it's good enough for LinkedIn (, then we may consider it for us.

Prepare your questions and do your homework, because we are about to face the professionals who are already building such apps.

Demonstrating apps that they've built, and talking about the challenges, will be:

1) Shai Rubinshtein

 - Short presentation on mobile app development using Phonegap and Sencha Touch

 - "Auto" magazine mobile app

2) Roman Svichar

 - An app for stock exchange trading
 - An automatic web platform for building mobile apps

3) Guy Lewin

 - Wizsupport chat application for support agents

and more...

You can park in the street.

If you can't find parking, try the parking lot in Menachem Begin, coming south from HaShalom right after Hashmonaim, on the right.
Then, cross the bridge over Menahem Begin and you're there.

Anyone available for emergency consulting today? A friend of a friend has just received a Cordova app back from outsourcing and it doesn't compile, needs help ASAP to salvage the project. Email me at privman on gmail. Thanks!

Do you have an app and need testers for your alpha product?

Are you curious/early adopter/like testing apps?

New meetup group for cross-testing new apps over coffee or beer, Early Adopters TLV, is here!

    Please join here:

Please spread the word to anyone who may want to join!

First meetup in a TLV pub will feature an awesome app for contact exchange via shaking your phones together. iPhone users are needed for this one and will get a free beer! A FREE BEER :)

a little bit more debugging tools and solutions will be great.. html5/js for mobile apps (with all the quirkes caused by different browsers implementations), are one of the hardests things to debug. id like to hear from the pros what they're using to overcome that difficulty. over all, was nice.

Hi. One good thing about developing with phonegap is that you don't have to test on IE8.
The problem is - some behaviours differ between Devices, even when using webkit.
The only solution is to test on different devices. Even simulators won't do the job.
I suggest constraining yourself to simple layouts, try avoiding dirty CSS tricks, and don't even think about trying to fixate a submit button when the keyboard opens.

You can use chrome remote debugging on Android, and hope that it will behave like in Phonegap.
You also have weinre, which is a remote debug script that allows you to watch the resources, but no step-by-step debugging.
Of course, you can always use alerts and console.logs...

Amit, you probably weren't referring to me when you asked to hear from "pros", but since no one else (so far) responded, I thought I'd share my own experience debugging a PhoneGap app (no Sencha Touch, sorry):
    Comments will be appreciated.

    Very high class meeting!
I was happy to see that people are asking many questions and the interaction was great
I think the presentations were very good, versatile, and educating.

Hope to organize more meetups like this.

    Hello everyone!

I'm the guy who developed the "Open Knesset" application using PhoneGap and Sencha Touch.
I enjoyed the presentations very much, and to see all the people interested in this technology.

I invite all of you to download "Open Knesset"s app source code from here:

AFAIK its the only Israeli app who's source code is open.
you're invited to contribute code - and gain valuable knowledge.

a lot of helpful information about the subject from some of the presenters. but still some of the presentations wasn't professional and the technical problems interfere the event.

Code examples would be a great way to give deeper understanding of how different technologies work.

I think it was great - but we should have been dong the faceoff thing. I think that PhoneGap Vs Appcelerator would be a perfect show down.
