Virgin Falls Hike

One of my favorite day hikes or overnight backpack trips in the state.
The hike into Virgin Falls, which will total around 9 miles going in and out, should be considered a strenuous hike. The trail descends around 1000 foot in elevation along a path that in many areas is rocky with uneven footing. The area is noted for its unique geological features and several (additional) other waterfalls including Big Laurel, Sheep Cave Falls, and Big Branch Falls. There are several notable caves in the area, including the cave above Virgin Falls, where the stream itself that forms the falls issues. Please allow 5 to 7 hours for the hike. There may be a little storytelling by the river (Caney Fork) about an incident there.
If spending the night before and or afterwards I recommend Sparta Tennessee a town I particularly like, you can also stay in Cookeville or McMinnville. I will be in Sparta Friday and Saturday night, We can have a Social Friday night at Happy Trails Brewery is Sparta.
I recommend spending the night before or after as the commute time back to Huntsville is about 3 hours.
We will meet at Happy Trails brewey parking lot, in Sparta TN at 8:30 and carpool from there to the trailhead( or you can meet at trailhead). We will start hike at 9:00 at the trailhead, parking is very limited so getting there early and carpooling form Sparta is a plus.
