Caballero Canyon to Eagle Rock in Topanga State Park

Details

This is a great mid-range hike for folks who want some good exercise and at the same time enjoy the local beauty offered in the Santa Monica Mountains.

Join us for a moderate to strenuous 10 to 11 mile roundtrip (semi- loop) hike that begins at the Caballero Canyon Trailhead in Tarzana.

After climbing 30 minutes to dirt Mullholland we'll turn toward the Temescal Fireroad. It's a gentle uphill two miles past open grasslands, chaparral slopes and live oaks. There are views of red sandstone rocks. We'll hike this until we reach the Hub Connector and then head west to Eagle Rock. We'll sit on Eagle Rock and snack while we take in the views.

After enjoying our rest, we'll hike back to Mulholland via the Garapito and Bent Arrow Trails. Sorry, but no dogs are allowed on this hike as we will be in a state park most of the time.

Hiking Difficulty:Moderate to strenuous for distance

Bring water, snacks, hat and sturdy sneakers or hiking shoes.

If you want to read more about this area click on the link below and preview this book. Go to page 65 and read about San Fernando Valley to the Sea. Our hike is the beginning part of this same one. It's going all the way to Will Rogers State Park. We'll do that one next time. http://books.google.com/books?id=KWfrmJ1DzPQC&pg=PT80&lpg=PT80&dq=caballero+canyon+to+mulholland

Hike Duration I estimate that the hike will take at most 5 hours. We should be back to the cars by around 1:30.
