What a fantastic day we all had yesterday paddling the west branch of the Brandywine! We had 15 paddlers. The morning was slightly bumpy when I pulled up to my usual put in spot to find that the path down to the river was completely overgrown with pricker bushes and poison ivy. Often times dealing with nature you have to adapt and over come. After a phone call we piled back into the van and drove directly across the river to another put in. Brandywine Outfitters has been nice enough to clear a spot on the river to allow the public to park and have safe access to the river. It is very generous of him to offer this. I knew the day was going to go well when my phone must have been bumped and heard blue grass music coming from my pocket. It really is a smart phone…it knew I needed some mood music while getting ready to hit the river. When Elaina said “I hear banjo music, paddle faster” that made my day. The river was running at a perfect level. We had to drag in a couple short spots, but for the most part it was smooth sailing. It’s been a while since I paddled this section (one of my favorite paddles because it holds so many memories with my brother and our friends) and it felt like going home. The river doesn’t have any major roads that drive by it so it’s a relatively quiet river. It’s a beautiful little river that winds through Chester County. It has changed a bit since the last time I paddled it. There were a lot of downed trees, but nothing that is impassable. We paddled 11 ½ miles in about 4 ½ hours (including a stop for lunch). There was a bald eagle spotted by one or two people, herons, and various other birds. The weather was perfect. The current was just right in order to push us down in a relaxing manner with a couple little tricky parts here and there to keep the blood pumping. After the paddle we loaded up and drove back to the cars which were parked at Ron’s Original Bar & Grill. After changing, and loading boats onto cars we went in for a bite to eat, some craft beer and several good laughs!! Ron’s Original has great food, great beer selection and our waitress Susan was top notch!!! I can’t say enough good things about the place. On top of that they gave our group a 15% discount off of our check. BRAVO to the staff at Ron’s!! Ron is a great guy and has done a great job with every restaurant he has owned…going all the way back to the original Pepper Mill!! I thoroughly enjoyed dining with everyone after the paddle where we shared stories, experiences, thoughts and above all…LUAGHS!! I truly appreciate everyone that came out and took part of a perfect day. Thank you all so very much for the support, the kind words, and the positive feedback. It’s all of you fun loving, open, caring people that makes the group what it is, and what people keep coming back for. Synergy is a fitting word. From the bottom of my heart…THANK YOU!! A very special thank you goes to Doug Q and Becky for being my sweepers. It’s nice to know that you have competent, skilled people in the back to make sure everyone stays with the group.
