Pyramid Fitness Hike and Beers

Now New & Improved with Updated Winter Start Time of 5:45!  No need to start late to avoid the summer sun & heat, so we'll start a bit earlier starting Oct 17.

Where is it?

Visit: to view on Google Maps. The trailhead begins at the end of Chandler Blvd at the Western Edge of Ahwatukee. Take I-10 south to Pecos, take a right on S 17th Avenue, then a left on W Chandler Blvd until you reach the end of the road. There is a parallel parking lot there.

Pyramid Trailhead

The Hike

Pyramid is a steep, well groomed trail. It is steep enough to make it a heart pounding fitness hike, but well groomed, so you can go as fast as your lungs and legs will allow. It is a 6 mile out and back and is generally completed in about two hours.

The steepest part of the trail is shown above, where you gain 1,000 feet in about one mile.

Detailed Description:

The first part of the hike is easy with rolling washes and small hills. The group tends to stay together. The next section is steep. You gain about 1000 feet in a mile and the group tends to split apart into two groups. No worries, if you fall behind, we will wait for you at the top. If you can not make it to the top, let someone know and you can backtrack to the trailhead. The third section is rolling with some quick ups and downs. The pace really picks up here. If you can not complete this section, we will pick you up on the way back. There is a quick detour onto the National Trail. Take a left from Pyramid to the National and in a few hundred yards, you will see panoramic view of Phoenix. After a short rest, we turn around and head back on the same trail(s).

Important Note: If you feel uncomfortable hiking alone, let someone know! You do not have to complete this hike. Although it is well marked, it is possible to take a wrong turn and end up in a neighboorhood. If you are unsure, stop and wait for the rest of the group to catch you on the way back.

What to bring:

1. Water

2. Headlamp

3. Cell Phone. My number is[masked]-7157. Call or text if you are running late. We can wait for you if you can not make the 5:48pm start time.

The Beer

We meet at Loco Patron afterwards for food and drink at ~8:00pm. The hike is optional, the beer (and or food) is not, and plenty of hikers have been known to skip the hike but meet us for the festivities, especially if you are nursing an injury. The address is:

1327 East Chandler Boulevard
Phoenix, AZ 85048

It is on the corner of Chandler and Foothills Parkway on the southeast corner, in the Ace Hardware shopping center, on the Southeast corner.

We're usually be there around 8pm.

Caveats and Addendums:

1. This is a fast paced fitness hike. Sometimes, you will find hikers post they are 'beginning early' to get a head start. If you are new to this hike, you can generally meet up earlier. Just post it on the board.

2. If the group agrees, sometimes we will mix it up and hike Dos Eliminator or Old Mine or Lost Camp. There is a general agreement at the trailhead.

3. If you hike at a moderate speed, we still would like to see you! There are plenty of folks that do not complete the hike. We never discourage anyone and you will improve every week. The goal is cardio fitness, good conversation offset by some light drinking.

Steve, the hike is a total of 6 miles. It's an out and back trail. You can do the whole thing or you can go as far as you want and turn around. There are different speeds of hikers, so depending on how fast/slow you want to go, there is usually someone to hike with. Some people will just do the pyramid hill and turn around, others do the whole thing. We have people in our group that couldn't make it up the hill their first try and are now doing the whole thing. Read the description of the hike and give it a try. Hope to see you!

The 10 is usually busy going into Phoenix. But not too bad going out. You should be ok, maybe make it an hour just to be safe.
