2-hour overview and hands-on practice on Scratch tool, as part of It's a Techie Summer Workshop.

7 to 12 years old - 10am to 12noon

13 yrs old and above - 1pm to 3pm

Cost: FREE

WHAT IS A TECHIE SUMMER WORKSHOP?

“It’s a Techie Summer!“ is a summer workshop that encourages children to explore, create and discover unique things and ideas with the use of technology. It helps develop computer skills that will lead children to become an effective technology user.

This workshop offers the following courses:

Scratch: Programming for Kids (by MIT)

2D Digital Arts (not offered on May 10)

The Art of Blogging (not offered on May 10)

WHO IS IT FOR?

Our ideal participants are between the ages of 7 and 12; and teenagers 13 or older who enjoy using a computer, have an interest in using computer, and are ready to be immersed further in the world of technology.

Ideally, the student should have had some experience using a computer (laptop or desktop) or tablet, ipad, or internet-enabled phone whether in playing games, watching videos or simple internet searching.

WHY YOU SHOULD JOIN?

It’s a Techie Summer gives children the opportunity to:

Familiarize themselves with the simple ways of using technology through practical hands-on computer-based exercises.

Learn the basic concepts in Computer Programming, 2D Digital Arts and Blogging.

Write stories, animate characters and create interactive outputs.

Create and publish their own blog for fun.

Examine basic design principles and integrate them into digital illustration.

ABOUT THE COURSE

SCRATCH: Programming for Kids

Scratch is a good introduction to programming for kids. It is a limited programming language developed by the M.I.T (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) Media Lab. It is a free, simple-to-learn programming tool where students can create their own animations, games, music, and art. This is a great environment where students learn programming concepts while they’re having fun and a good avenue to develop their creativity through making their own scratch projects.

What are the requirements?

​No previous programming skills are required, but students should be comfortable using a computer and browser (internet explorer, mozilla, etc.), and managing files (opening, saving, copying, etc).

Students do not need to purchase any software or textbook.
