Scott Berkun’s “Year without Pants” and the future of work

Watch Live! http://www.wbt-tv.com/p/live.html

What’s it like to work at WordPress.com, the 8th-most-trafficked website in the U.S., where everyone works from home, no one uses email, and dozens of improvements launch every day?

For our December TechX, Scott Berkun will join us to share his unique behind-the-scenes story of the year he spent leading a team of brilliant programmers designing and building new features at WordPress – and what he learned about productivity, creativity, and leadership from the kind of workplace that just might be in everyone’s future.

Come explore the culture and methods behind the company that powers 20% of the web: Wordpress.

Would love to see more employers hiring this way. Do we know anyone besides Wordpress?

In many service jobs it's implied. If you're hired as a waiter and you stink, they'll fire you very quickly, which is effectively hire by trial. Also if you consider how many startup founders first hire people they've worked with at previous companies, it's the same concept just applied differently. Many companies offer internships which is really an extended hire by trial experience.

I'll do some research, but so far I don't know of any major corporations that hire by trial as a defined policy.

Interesting topic, dynamic speaker...I just wish that his presentation had been a bit longer (with fewer questions).

Thanks for the feedback. I have longer versions of the presentation, but for 7pm on a Thursday night something shorter and interactive usually works best. Was there something specific you hoped I would talk about that didn't come up in the Q&A?

Enjoyed the talk. Really liked the idea of "hire by trial". Perhaps can also be called "hire by trial & error"

Good beer, good new concept of remote work, thanx to Amanda for allowing them to give me a book.

my only concern is if I am a good at my skills and need a job at Wordpress .. I will sign up for their blog .. Start writing .. Continue contributing my efforts as a developer .. Without job .. For about next 2 years .. After that if I am lucky enough .. I will get hired by "hire by trial" method .. Only if I am lucky .. I would rather apply to Apple or Google, get a job based on my knowledge and experience .. Work there for 2 years, pay my bills .. Work very hard and perform very best in what I do.. Take care of my family ..

I think before dev's, ba's, qa's we are all Humans and .... We can not love or share our feeling Remotely.. How about having all future Meetups Remotly!!!! ... Mixture of both remote and non remote could be good ...

Does the venue have chairs and tables? I like to park my laptop on a table instead of my lap.
