Douglas Crockford: JavaScript: The Good Parts(SF Edition)

Additional New TechXploration location: San Francisco!

We are pleased to announce the first TechXploration free event in San Francisco! Woot Woot!

Our speaker is Douglas Crockford.....JavaScript Superhero! He will describe how developing JavaScript "radically changed my way of thinking about programming languages."

Come and meet Douglas Crockford, an American entrepreneur, legendary programmer and the leading voice on JavaScript. Douglas will speak about his own journey and experience with the language including where it is flawed and where it shines.

Douglas Crockford was born in the Frostbite Falls, Minnesota, but left when he was only six months old because it was just too damn cold. He turned his back on a promising career in television when he discovered computers. He has worked in learning systems, small business systems, office automation, games, interactive music, multimedia, location-based entertainment, social systems, and programming languages.

He is the inventor of Tilton, the ugliest programming language that was not specifically designed to be an ugly programming language. He is best known for having discovered that there are good parts in JavaScript. This was an important and unexpected discovery. He also discovered the JSON Data Interchange Format, the world's most loved data format. And he works at Paypal.

Can someone clarify the location for me? On Google maps, 199 Fremont Street is near the corner of Beale and Howard Streets (not corner of Howard and 3rd). I plan to walk from the Caltrain station (thanks for the info, Mark), so I want to make sure of where I'm going.

Rick; Stubhub "is" nearer to the corner of Howard and Beale (at 199 Fremont St. on the 4th floor). Here are a couple of links for verifying my understanding about the location of the event: A search result page for "StubHub" at https://www.google.com... and a contact page from StubHub's website at http://www.stubhub.co... should help to reassure anyone having any doubts. [However, if anyone knows otherwise, an update correcting my mistake would be greatly appreciated.] Anyone walking should know that it's almost a half hour each way for those good at walking. An alternative that takes the same amount of time during commute hours is the electric train catercorner from Caltrain (use the F, KT or N and get off at Folsom & Embarcadero || $1.50 for honest riders); but if time or weather are an issue, one of the many taxis waiting at Caltrain will be happy to charge about $7.00 or more for one way.

Entrance is on Howard between Beale and Fremont. If you see the Town Hall restaurant, you're in the right place. Go in the courtyard next to Town Hall for the Building Main Entrance.

This link for G-Maps shows 181 Fremont under construction and the Town Hall Restaurant in that location... but it has 345 Howard as its address:

    https://www.google.com/maps/@37.789337,-122.395303,3a,75y,20.85h,97.17t/data=!3m4!1e1!3m2!1sQY6BgxlH0b4TFtZYA9ftxg!2e0?hl=en

If you pull up the map for Beale St, you can see the corner building at Howard St is MARKED 199 FREMONT

    https://www.google.com/maps/@37.790102,-122.394507,3a,75y,270h,90t/data=!3m4!1e1!3m2!1s_yAcWUQ8LJlbaBUAKa3uoQ!2e0?hl=en

Go figure... I guess this was the back side of 199 Fremont, but the new construction closed off the Fremont side.
\ So go to Beale and Howard, see the Fremont address on the building and enter. Don't ask questions....

Fwiw, the Caltrain Bullet from PA to SF is about 40 minutes. Caltrain's return trip "Local" at 9:40, 10:40 or 12 Midnight takes 30 minutes longer. There's plenty of legally free parking nearby--if you know where to look. The Stanford Shopping center, a couple of blocks away, is the lazy less-than-legal solution, but only if you're careful about how you do it. If not, then parking at the station adds an extra $5.00 to the $14.00 RT train ticket. The remaining part of the trip involves a 10 to 15 minute walk from 4th & King to 3rd & Howard. Instead of walking, bicycling your bike is better and BayAreaBikeShare is best. It's about 5 minutes from door to door. (Bike Share racks are everywhere, including 4th & King and 3rd & Howard). However, it's a bit pricey if you don't have an annual membership. This works best only for those concerned about tight budgets, carbon footprints or excessively long boring drives causing wear & tear not covered by passengers sharing gas & parking costs. Ymmv.

Mark, thanks for the reminder about Bay Area Bike Share. When I returned from Barcelona a year ago I immediately longed for Bicing, their version of a community bike scheme. I should sign up just on principle!

Sorry- Too far to travel. Live and work in Silicon Valley (Santa Clara County). It would take me hours to get to The City that time of day. Hope that those that live/work in The City can attend and that they have a good time.
