A screening of The Vula Connection (https://www.powerentertainment.tv/programmes/vula-connection-the/26/) (58 min.) -- a movie about the fight against apartheid and the homebrew encrypted communication systems devised by Tim Jenkins.

Tim Jenkin is an unlikely revolutionary. Quiet and shy, he decided, unusually for a white South African, to fight against his own government in the 1970’s. <..>

This, however, is much more than an escape story. It’s about a man who played a pivotal role in taking on the Apartheid regime in the most unexpected way. After his audacious escape, Jenkin disappeared into the backrooms of the ANC’s exiled military. Working from a non-descript London flat, he set about designing an ingenious secret communications system which enabled operatives to dodge South Africa’s feared intelligence service and penetrate South Africa’s borders. Long before the internet, Jenkin worked out how to send encrypted messages down a telephone line to anonymous public call boxes.
